Will the sherpa side go flat and matted?
Sherpa mats when it is washed hot or tumbled hot — almost never from use. The pile is what you are paying for, so the care instructions here are less housekeeping advice and more the difference between a two-year blanket and a two-month one.

The step people skip: shake it out hard while it is still damp. Thirty seconds of that lifts the pile back up and saves you the flat, pressed look that dried-in-a-heap sherpa always gets.

The problem with most throws is that they are one thing. Either they are handsome and thin — nice on the sofa, useless the moment you are actually cold — or they are warm and look like something from a motel. So you end up owning both, and the warm one lives folded out of sight because it is embarrassing. A two-sided blanket ends that: patterned face out when it is folded on the sofa, sherpa side in when you pull it over yourself.
The sherpa backing is what makes it warm without weight
Sherpa works by holding a layer of still air inside a looped pile. That is a genuinely different mechanism from a heavy woven blanket, which warms you by sheer mass. The practical consequence is that this gets warm fast — within a minute or two of being over you — rather than the slow build you get from something dense. It is why people reach for a sherpa throw at 9pm when the heating has gone off, instead of turning the heating back on.
The leaf-patterned face on the other side does the other half of the job. It gives the blanket a front, which means it can be folded and left in view without looking like laundry. And because the pattern side is smooth rather than piled, it slides over itself when folded and stacks flat in a basket instead of ballooning.
