Which length — including the very long one?

Two of these are standard mats and one is a runner, and the runner exists for a bathroom layout most mats can't cope with. Work out whether you're covering a spot or covering a stretch.

Choose If this sounds like you
18"×30" A shower cubicle, a compact ensuite, or a second mat for in front of the basin so the drips from washing your face have somewhere to land.
24"×36" A bathtub you step over sideways, or a shared bathroom where several people use the same mat before nine in the morning.
24"×72" A long narrow bathroom with the tub down one wall and the vanity opposite, where you currently have two mismatched mats trying to bridge the gap.

The 24"×72" also works as a runner in a galley kitchen or in front of a laundry pair.

Is a waffle mat as absorbent as a plush one?

A waffle mat holds less water at once and gets rid of it far faster, which is usually the trade you want. The thick shaggy mat that soaks up everything is also the one still wet at bedtime.

Works on Avoid
Tile, vinyl, sealed timber and sealed concrete. Also good in a windowless bathroom, where fast drying matters more than raw capacity. Fabric softener and dryer sheets, which fill the waffle pockets with residue. Also, don't lay it back down flat while it's still soaked.

Machine wash warm, tumble low or line dry. The step people skip: hanging it over the tub edge after the last shower rather than leaving it on the floor. The waffle structure only dries fast if air can reach both faces of it.

A bath mat that isn't still damp when you get home from work.

Everyone knows the smell. It isn't mould exactly, it's the flat sour note a bathroom picks up when a thick mat has been lying on cold tile holding yesterday's water. You wash it, it comes back fine for four days, and then it's back. The problem isn't cleanliness — it's that a dense pile mat in a room with no airflow has no realistic route to dry, so it spends most of its life somewhere between damp and wet.

Waffle Bath Mat detail of the waffle weave texture

What the waffle weave is actually doing

Waffle is a weave structure, not a surface treatment. The threads are woven so that the cloth forms a grid of raised ridges with square recessed pockets between them, and the whole thing is built that way rather than having a texture pressed into it afterwards. That means the pockets can't flatten out with use the way a printed or embossed texture does.

Two things follow from the geometry. First, the ridges hold your feet slightly above the pockets, so water that has come off you is sitting beside your soles rather than under them. Second, the open pockets expose far more surface area to the air than a flat cloth of the same size — which is the entire reason waffle towels and mats dry quickly. Density holds water; surface area releases it.

The practical version: a plush mat wins if your only measure is how much water it can hold in one go. A waffle mat wins on every subsequent use of the day, because it's the only one that's dry again by the time the second person needs it.

The two colourways

  • Beige — The warm neutral. In a bathroom with cream tile, a timber vanity or brass fittings, this keeps the floor from going cold and clinical. It's also the more forgiving of the two between washes.
  • Grey — The cooler, sharper option. Against white porcelain, grey tile and chrome it reads as deliberate rather than as an afterthought, and the waffle ridges show up more clearly in a mid-tone than in a pale one.

What You're Getting

  • One Waffle Bath Mat in your chosen Size and Colour
  • Three sizes — 18"×30", 24"×36", and a 24"×72" runner for long narrow bathrooms
  • Two colourways — Beige and Grey
  • Woven waffle structure, so the pockets are built into the cloth and don't flatten with use
  • Raised ridges that keep your soles above the water the mat has just taken up
  • Dries between uses — the open pockets give it the airflow a dense pile mat never gets
  • Machine wash warm, tumble low or line dry
  • No fabric softener, and hang it over the tub edge rather than leaving it flat on tile
