Twelve sizes — which one is mine?

Measure the tabletop, then add about 8" to each dimension for a normal drop, or 16" if you want the cloth hanging near seat height. The sizes group into four families, and knowing which family you're in makes the list much shorter.

Choose If this sounds like you
24"×24", 33"×33" Small squares for a nightstand, a plant table, or laid on the diagonal over a larger plain cloth so the embroidered corners point down the sides.
43"×43", 51"×51", 59"×59" A square dining table, or a round one where you want the four corners hanging as points rather than following the curve.
43"×63", 51"×71", 51"×79" The everyday four-to-six seater rectangle in most kitchens. If you're guessing, you're almost certainly in this group.
59"×87", 59"×98", 59"×106", 59"×118" A long dining table seating eight or more, or a table with leaves you actually pull out when people come.

Between two sizes? Take the larger. Extra drop reads as generous; a short cloth reads as the wrong cloth.

Will the embroidery survive being washed?

Embroidery is stitched thread sitting slightly proud of the cloth, so it fails by snagging, not by fading. Protect it from things that catch and it will outlast the base fabric.

Works on Avoid
Wood, glass and stone tabletops, sideboards, consoles, and over a plain undercloth as a decorative topper. Washing it loose alongside zips, hooks and buckles. Bleach. High-heat drying, which tightens the stitching against a base cloth that has already relaxed.

Cold gentle wash in a mesh bag, tumble low or line dry. The step people skip: iron it on the reverse side, not the face. Pressing directly onto embroidery flattens the raised stitching and it does not come back.

Someone walks in, looks at the table, and assumes you set it deliberately.

The gap between a table that's laid and a table that's just got things on it is smaller than people think, and it isn't about matching crockery. It's about whether there's a base layer. Put plates straight onto bare wood and each item sits alone; put them on an embroidered cloth with a tassel edge and the whole surface becomes one composed thing, with the plates as part of it. This is why the same four bowls can look like a mess on Tuesday and like a set meal on Sunday.

Embroidery and tassels are both about catching light

A printed pattern is perfectly flat. Under a ceiling light it looks identical from every seat at the table, which is another way of saying it looks like wallpaper. Embroidered thread stands above the surface of the cloth, so it catches light on one side and casts a shadow on the other. Move your head and the pattern changes slightly. That small shift is the entire reason embroidery reads as expensive and print reads as printed.

The tassel edge does the same job at the hem. Instead of a flat cut line running along the table edge, you get a fringe with depth to it, and the added weight makes the cloth hang straight down at the corners rather than curling outward. On a large table, where the drop is the part guests see most from a seated position, that's the difference between a cloth that looks fitted and one that looks like a sheet.

Both features are also why this cloth wants a mesh bag in the machine. Raised stitching and loose tassels are the two things a zip finds first.

The three colourways

  • Blue Charm — The cool option. Sits well in a kitchen with white or grey cabinetry and stone worktops, and stops a very neutral room from going flat. Reads as calm rather than bright.
  • Golden Serenity — Warm gold tones. This is the one that makes an evening table look lit, because the embroidery picks up candle and lamp light directly. Chosen by people who host in the dark half of the year.
  • Brown Luxe — The deepest and most forgiving. Against dark wood furniture it disappears into the palette in a good way, and it's the least likely of the three to show a coffee ring before you get to it.
