How do I stop a new cotton towel going stiff?
Almost every towel that ends up scratchy was ruined by fabric softener, not by the towel. Softener leaves a waxy film on cotton fibres that both stiffens the pile and stops it absorbing — which is the one thing a towel is for.

That's why shaking a towel out before hanging is worth the two seconds — you're separating the loops so air can circulate through them. A towel folded straight onto a rail while damp has almost no airflow through the pile, which is where the musty smell comes from.
