Which diameter fits my round table?

Measure straight across the widest point of the tabletop, then pick the size above it — the extra is your drop over the edge. A round cloth that matches the table exactly sits like a fitted sheet and looks wrong; you want it to hang.

Choose If this sounds like you
35" A small bistro table, a round side table by the armchair, or the little table in the hall that holds the wreath candle from December onward.
47" The standard round kitchen table that seats four, where you want a proper drop but not so much that it lands in anyone's lap.
59" A larger round dining table seating six, or a smaller table you want almost floor-length for the holidays.

Three colours, three sizes — pick the drop first, then the colour that argues least with your chairs.

Can it handle a holiday table, or is it decorative only?

It's a real cloth meant to be eaten off, not a display piece you whip away before the plates land. Plaid is unusually good at this, because a woven check hides the crumb and the drip in a way a plain cream cloth never manages.

Works on Avoid
Round wood and glass dining tables, pedestal side tables, a covered porch table, and card tables you'd rather nobody looked at directly. Bleach on the red tones, and low-hanging candles — a round cloth with a long drop is exactly the shape that finds a flame.

Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, tumble low. The step people skip: pull it out of the dryer slightly damp and lay it straight onto the table. Round cloths are miserable to iron and this makes it unnecessary.

The round table stops being the awkward one in the room.

Round tables are lovely and completely uncooperative. Placemats sit at odd angles, a runner has nowhere sensible to run, and every centrepiece looks marooned in the middle of a big wooden circle. December makes it worse, because everything else in the house gets dressed and the round table just sits there being bare. A round cloth solves the geometry in one move — the drop follows the curve all the way around, the surface becomes a single colour field, and the centrepiece suddenly has a setting instead of a wooden expanse to float in.

Why plaid is the practical choice, not just the festive one

A check pattern is made of overlapping bands of colour crossing at right angles. That means at any point on the cloth there is dark next to light, and the eye reads the whole surface as pattern rather than as a background where marks stand out. Spill gravy on plain linen and you have a stain everyone can see from across the room for the rest of the meal. Spill it on plaid and you have something to deal with in the wash later.

The same logic covers the creases. A cloth that has been folded in a bag arrives with fold lines, and on a flat colour those lines catch the light and stay visible all evening. On a check they disappear into the grid within about ten minutes of the cloth settling. It's the reason plaid has been the default holiday table pattern for a century, and it has nothing to do with Christmas cards.

The three colourways

  • Evergreen Plaid — Deep green ground with the check running through it. Reads as forest rather than bright holiday, so it sits comfortably on the table through winter and doesn't feel out of place in January. The one to pick if your room has wood tones and you want the table to go quiet and rich.
  • Crimson Cheer — The traditional red. Bold, unmistakably festive, and the one that makes the room look decorated the moment it goes down. Chosen by people who host in December and want the table to announce it.
  • Rustic Berry — A softer, deeper berry tone — warmer and less bright than the crimson. Suits a farmhouse kitchen or a room with a lot of cream and natural wood, where a full red would shout.
