Can it handle a holiday table, or is it decorative only?
It's a real cloth meant to be eaten off, not a display piece you whip away before the plates land. Plaid is unusually good at this, because a woven check hides the crumb and the drip in a way a plain cream cloth never manages.

Round tables are lovely and completely uncooperative. Placemats sit at odd angles, a runner has nowhere sensible to run, and every centrepiece looks marooned in the middle of a big wooden circle. Why plaid is the practical choice, not just the festive one
A check pattern is made of overlapping bands of colour crossing at right angles. That means at any point on the cloth there is dark next to light, and the eye reads the whole surface as pattern rather than as a background where marks stand out. Spill gravy on plain linen and you have a stain everyone can see from across the room for the rest of the meal. Spill it on plaid and you have something to deal with in the wash later.
