Which color, given this thing lives on the sink and not in a cupboard?

All four are the same colander — the choice is purely about what you can stand looking at every day next to the tap. A colander gets left out wet more often than it gets put away, so pick for the counter, not for the drawer.

Choose If this sounds like you
Pink Your kitchen is all white cabinets and stainless steel and you're quietly tired of it.
Green There are already herbs on the windowsill and a wooden board leaning against the splashback.
Blue Grey You want it to read as part of the kitchen rather than as a colored plastic thing. The one that shows water marks least.
White Everything on your bench matches, and you'd rather it disappear than make a statement.

Two is not an unreasonable number — one for washing, one for what's already been washed.

What should I actually be putting in it?

This is a rinse-and-drain tool for cold running water, and it's very good at that. We make no heat rating claims for it, so the honest guidance is to keep boiling water out of it and use it for everything else.

    Works on Avoid
Berries, grapes and cherry tomatoes — the small round things that escape a wide-holed colander. Tipping a pot of boiling water straight through it. Take the pasta out with tongs, or let the water cool first.
Rice, quinoa and lentils, where you need to rinse repeatedly and pour the cloudy water off. Using it as a chopping surface. Cutting directly on it scores the drain holes and traps food in the scratches.
Salad leaves, spinach and herbs that need to sit and drip before they go anywhere near dressing. Leaving it under a hot oven tray or on a warm hob to dry.

Rinse it out straight after use, and stand it on its side to drain rather than flat. The step people skip: getting a brush into the holes. Rice starch and tomato pulp dry into the perforations and go invisible once they're pale — thirty seconds with a washing-up brush from the outside in clears the lot.

The berries get rinsed in the thing they're going to sit and drip in.

The usual routine is three objects for one job: a bowl to wash in, a sieve to tip into, and a tea towel underneath because the sieve has nowhere to stand. Half the raspberries end up bruised in the transfer and the tea towel is pink by the end. This does the whole sequence in one vessel — fill, agitate, pour off, and then leave it standing while the water finds its way out.

The drain pattern is the whole product

Colanders fail in one of two directions. Big holes let small food through, so you lose half a punnet of blueberries down the plughole. Fine mesh holds everything back but clogs instantly and takes forever to dry, and once starch has set in a mesh it never really comes out. The perforation here sits in the middle: dense enough that grains of rice stay put, open enough that a full load of wet leaves drains in a minute rather than sitting in a puddle at the bottom.

The other thing that matters is that it stands on its own. A hand-held sieve has to be held or balanced, which is why it always ends up wedged across the sink where it blocks the tap. This sits flat and stable on the bench with the food raised off the base, so the water that comes out has somewhere to go and doesn't get reabsorbed by the bottom layer of whatever you just washed.

    • Pink — warm and soft rather than bright, the one that makes a plain white kitchen look like somebody actually chooses things.
    • Green — muted and slightly earthy. Reads naturally alongside timber boards, ceramic and anything growing on the sill.
    • Blue Grey — the quietest of the four and the most forgiving about limescale spots and water marks, which is worth something on a colander.
    • White — neutral and unremarkable in the good way. Picks up nothing from the rest of the kitchen and argues with nothing.
