How long a cloth do I need for my table?

Every size here is 55" wide, so the only thing you are choosing is length — measure your table top and add roughly 16" for a drop of about 8" each end. Go longer if you want the tassels swinging near the chair seats, shorter if you hate cloth in your lap.

Choose If this sounds like you
55"×55" A square kitchen table, a small round one, or a side table you want dressed. Also the one for a card table at Christmas that you would rather nobody looked at closely.
55"×63" A four-seater in a flat or a galley kitchen, where anything longer starts pooling on the floor at one end.
55"×71" The standard six-seater most dining rooms actually have. If you are guessing, guess this one.
55"×79" A generous six, or a six that gets an extra chair squeezed on each end when family visits.
55"×87" An eight-seater, or a six-seater with the leaf permanently in because that is where everyone works during the day.
55"×98" The long farmhouse table, or a trestle set up outside for a birthday where a short cloth would look stranded in the middle.

If your table extends, buy for the extended length — a cloth that is slightly long every day beats one that is short on the day it matters.

How do I keep the tassels from turning into a knotted fringe?

The stripes will look after themselves. The tassel trim is the part that decides whether this still looks good in a year.

Do Avoid
Wash cool on a gentle cycle, on its own or with other flat items. Shake it out hard while damp, then hang it over a rail or a line so the weight of the cloth pulls the creases down. Washing it with anything that has hooks, zips or velcro — that is what shreds a tassel fringe. Also avoid a hot tumble, which shrinks the fringe at a different rate to the cloth and makes the edge ripple.

The step people skip: comb the tassels straight with your fingers while the cloth is still damp. Thirty seconds then saves you untangling forty knots once it has dried into a tangle.

The table stops being a surface and starts being where you eat.

A bare dining table is a desk with chairs. It collects mail, laptops, keys and the one charger everybody fights over, and by dinner time you are clearing a workspace rather than setting a table. A cloth changes the rule without anyone discussing it: things get put away because they no longer belong there. The stripes and the tassel edge do the other half of the job — they make an ordinary weeknight look like it was arranged, which is a lot of return on the two seconds it takes to shake a cloth out.

Why the stripe direction and the fringe are doing the work

Stripes running the length of a table make it read longer and more deliberate, which is why you see them on tables in places that charge for the privilege. But the reason this particular cloth survives real use is the hand-finished tassel edge rather than a machine-turned hem. A hem is a fold and a line of stitching — the point where a cloth first frays and puckers after enough washes. A tassel trim ends the fabric in fringe instead, so there is no rolled edge to twist out of shape and no stitched line to pull. It also means the cloth never looks stiff: the edge moves when someone leans on the table, and it drapes over corners instead of sticking out in four flat wings.

Which stripe

  • Navy Stripe — crisp and nautical against white plates. The one that looks right in a coastal or classic room and forgives a spilled glass of water better than pale shades forgive red wine.
  • Coffee Stripe — warm dark brown. Sits naturally on a timber table and disappears into a room with leather or rattan in it.
  • Beige Stripe — the quietest. Barely-there tonal stripes for people who want the cloth without the statement.
  • Red Stripe — proper bistro energy. Choose it if you want the table to be the cheerful thing in a plain kitchen, and expect it to get used for every birthday.
