Gauze cotton crinkles up as it softens, so it reads slightly smaller on the bed than the measurement suggests. If you're between the two, take the bigger one.
Won't it come out of the wash looking crumpled?
Yes, and that's the point — the crinkle is the fabric, not a fault. Gauze cotton is meant to look lived in. The mistake is treating it like a flat sheet and trying to iron it into submission.

Why gauze cotton gets better and most blankets get worse
Gauze is cotton woven in fine layers with deliberate slack in the weave, then washed so it puckers. That slack is what gives it the airiness — there's more space than thread, which is why it drapes around a shoulder instead of sitting on top of it like a board. It's also why it dries quickly, which matters more than people expect in a blanket that ends up on a child's bed.
The useful part is what happens over time. A tight woven throw is at its best on day one and stiffens with every wash. Gauze goes the other way: each wash loosens the pucker a little more, so it gets softer and more crumpled and more like the blanket you already have a relationship with. Cotton also takes a hot wash if something goes wrong on it, which is not a small consideration for anything living near a toddler.
