Which size fits the floor you actually have?

Measure the clear floor in front of the shower or tub before you choose — an oval mat needs space on both sides to sit right. Both sizes come in all three colors.

Will it slide, and will it stay damp?

A bath mat is only as good as the floor under it and the air around it. Slipping and lingering damp are two different problems with two different fixes.

Machine wash warm on a gentle cycle and tumble low, or hang it to dry. Wash it more often than feels necessary — bath mats collect more than towels do. The step people skip: hanging it up between showers. A mat left flat on tile all day never dries from underneath, and that trapped layer is what makes a bathroom smell before anything is visibly wrong.

Mop and dry the floor underneath when you wash the mat. Cleaning one and not the other achieves very little.

The five seconds after a shower are the worst part of a bathroom. You are warm, then one foot lands on tile that has been at room temperature all night, and the whole thing is undone. Everything else in the room — the fittings, the tile, the towels — is decided by how it looks. The mat is the only part decided entirely by how it feels underfoot at seven in the morning.

Rectangular mats fight bathrooms. They sit square to the tile grout, so any drift or rucking is instantly visible, and their corners are the first thing a door catches and folds over. An oval has no corners to catch and no grid to line up against, which means it reads as tidy even when someone has nudged it three inches out of place with a wet foot.

The plush pile is the other half. Absorbency in a bath mat is about surface area rather than thickness — a dense pile presents far more fibre to your wet feet than a flat woven mat does, so water is pulled off quickly instead of pooling on top and transferring straight onto the floor when you step away. That is also what makes it feel warm: the pile holds air, and air is what your feet register as warmth.
