What size are the cushions you already own?

Measure one of your existing inserts corner to corner and pick the matching size — that is the whole decision. Sherpa has a little give, so a cover on the exact size of your insert sits full and rounded rather than flat and sad.

Choose If this sounds like you
40x40cm Small accent cushions on an armchair or a reading nook, where a big square would swallow the seat.
45x45cm The size most sofa cushions in the house already are. If you are not sure and cannot find the tape measure, it is probably this one.
50x50cm A deep three-seater where 45s disappear into the back cushions and you want something you can actually lean on.
60x60cm Floor cushions, a window seat, or the corner of a sectional that people actually sleep on.

Covers are the cheap way to change a room seasonally — a lot of people keep two sets and swap them when the heating goes on.

Will the sherpa still be fluffy after it goes through the wash?

Yes, if you keep it away from heat and fabric softener. Sherpa pile mats down for the same two reasons every time: a hot dryer welds the loops together, and softener leaves a film that makes the fibres clump instead of standing up.

Do this Avoid this
Cold machine wash, gentle cycle, covers turned inside out Hot water, which is what flattens the pile permanently
Wash the light colours together — White, Beige and Pink pick up dye from a dark load Fabric softener or dryer sheets of any kind
Air dry flat, then shake hard once dry to lift the pile back up High-heat tumble drying

The step nearly everyone skips is the shake at the end. Straight out of the wash sherpa looks slightly damp and defeated; thirty seconds of shaking it out brings the loft back and people who do not do this assume the cover is ruined.

The cheapest way to make a tired sofa look like you meant it.

Cushions age faster than the furniture they sit on. The inserts are usually fine — still plump, still supportive — but the covers have gone shiny at the corners, faded on the side facing the window, and picked up a stain nobody can identify. You end up flipping them over so the good side faces out, which fools nobody. Swapping the covers costs a fraction of new cushions and takes about four minutes per cushion, and the room reads as deliberately styled rather than slowly wearing down.

Why sherpa reads as expensive when a flat fabric does not

Sherpa is a looped pile, not a printed surface. Because the loops stand up off the base, light catches the tops and shadows sit between them, which is why a plain Grey sherpa cushion has more depth than a plain grey cotton one. That texture is also what makes it forgiving in daily use: the pile hides the creases and dents that show up instantly on flat linen or smooth velvet, so the cushion still looks composed after someone has been lying on it all evening. The trade-off is that pile needs pile care, which is what the second box above is about. Get the washing right and the surface stays lofted; get it wrong and you have a flat cushion with a slight sheen.

Which colour to pick

  • White, Beige and Khaki — the safe neutral run. White reads crisp and slightly hotel-like, Beige warms up a cool grey sofa, and Khaki is the one that works if your room already leans olive, oak and rattan.
  • Grey and Coffee Colour — the two that disappear into a room instead of announcing themselves. Grey for a modern scheme with black metal and concrete tones, Coffee Colour for a brown leather sofa where grey would fight the undertone.
  • Yellow, Orange and Pink — the accent colours. Buy these when the sofa is neutral and the room needs one warm point to look at. Two of these on a beige three-seater does more than four more neutrals ever will.
  • Green and Purple — the deeper accents. Green sits well beside real plants and wood; Purple is the one for a darker, more evening-lit room where a bright colour would look garish.
