Do I need this if I already own a colander?
This is a long-handled skimmer with a strainer bowl, not a sink colander — the two do different jobs and most kitchens want both. A colander waits in the sink; this goes into the pan.
| Choose it | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| Yes | You blanch vegetables, poach eggs, boil dumplings or lift pasta out to check it, and you are tired of tipping an entire heavy pan into the sink to get four things out of it. |
| It still earns its hook | You mostly boil pasta and drain it in one go. Even then, the skimmer is what pulls the scum off a stock and rescues something small from hot oil without a splash. |
The handle length is the real difference — it keeps your knuckles above a rolling boil rather than in the steam.
Will stainless steel mark my pans or discolor?
Stainless is hard, which is exactly why it lasts and exactly why you have to think about what it touches. It will not stain from tomato or turmeric the way nylon does.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Stainless pans, cast iron, enamelled stockpots, deep fryers, stock and broth, lifting food out of hot oil | Scraping the base of a non-stick pan, prising anything stuck, using it as a lever on a tight lid |
Wash it soon after use in hot soapy water and dry it rather than leaving it to drip. The step people skip: cleaning the mesh while it is still wet. Once starch from pasta water or egg white dries in the perforations it sets hard, and you are then poking at it with a brush. Thirty seconds under a hot tap straight after draining avoids that entirely.
If a cloudy film builds up from hard water, a wipe with diluted white vinegar takes it off.
Stop carrying a boiling pan across the kitchen to get four dumplings out of it.
The standard method is genuinely bad: lift a full pan of near-boiling water, walk it to the sink, tip it through a colander into a cloud of steam that fogs your glasses, then realise you have overcooked everything because it kept cooking while you did all that. A long-handled skimmer removes the whole sequence. Food comes out; the water stays on the hob.

Perforated steel drains faster than mesh, and never sags
Fine wire mesh skimmers look precise and then buckle the first time you load them with wet potatoes, and the weave traps starch you can never fully clear. A perforated stainless bowl is a single formed piece: the holes let water fall away fast, the bowl keeps its shape under weight, and there is no weave for anything to lodge in.
Stainless also has no temperature anxiety attached to it. You can rest it against the rim of a pan on a live burner, dip it into oil, or leave it sitting in a stock, and it will not soften, warp or leach a plastic smell into what you are cooking. Over years, the thing that kills a nylon skimmer is a melted edge from a moment of inattention. That failure is not available here.
The long handle does the ergonomic work — it puts distance between your hand and the steam column coming off a rolling boil, and it gives you the reach to work in a deep stockpot without leaning over it.
