Between two lengths? Take the longer one. A deeper drop always looks better than a cloth that stops short of the edge.
Do the tassels turn into a knotted mess?
Only if you wash it the way you'd wash a towel. The fringe is the one part of this cloth that needs a thought, and it needs it twice — going into the machine and coming out of it.
