Which of the three sizes is the one you'll actually reach for?
All three are the same blanket — the only question is how much of a bed or sofa you want it to cover. Think about where it will spend most of its life, not the biggest thing you own.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 59"×79" | One person, one armchair, one evening. Also the size that folds small enough to actually live in a basket rather than on the back of the sofa permanently. |
| 79"×91" | Two of you on the sofa and neither wants to be the one with a cold shoulder. This is also the size that sits well across a double bed. |
| 91"×98" | You want it as the bedspread — full width with drop down both sides, tucked or left to hang. |
If you are hesitating between two, the larger one has never been the regret.
It's 100% cotton — will it shrink or go stiff?
Cotton behaves predictably. It shrinks with heat and softens with use. Keep the heat down and the second part is the only part you notice.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Cool machine wash, gentle cycle | Hot water, which is where cotton shrinkage comes from |
| Low tumble, or dried flat and reshaped by hand | A hot dryer cycle, especially the first one |
| Warm iron on the reverse to release fold lines | Bleach, and heavy fabric softener that coats the weave |
The step people skip: reshaping it while damp. Cotton dries into whatever shape you leave it in. Pull the corners square once before it dries and you never need the iron.
The blanket that stays out all year, because it doesn't look like winter.
Most throws are seasonal by accident. The fleece one is too warm to touch in July, the chunky knit sheds on everything, and so from about April they both go in a cupboard and the sofa looks bare until October. Which means for half the year the room is missing the one thing that made it look lived in.
A Scandinavian bird print in cotton does not have that problem. It is light enough to sit on a bed in summer and warm enough to pull over you in February, and the pattern reads as design rather than as a cold-weather object.

100% cotton is why it gets better instead of worse
Synthetic throws peak on day one. Every wash after that adds a little pilling, a little static, and a little of that plasticky slickness, until eventually it is a thing you keep in the car. Cotton runs the other way: the weave relaxes, the hand softens, and the blanket you have after twenty washes is nicer than the one out of the packaging.
It also breathes, which is the part that decides whether something stays on a bed. Cotton lets body heat move, so you can sleep under it in August without waking up damp — and layer it under a duvet in winter without overheating by 2am.
Reversible, and why that matters on a bird print
The Scandinavian bird motif runs on both faces with the colors swapped, so the same blanket gives you a lighter, more graphic side and a deeper, denser one. On a bed, the top edge always folds back over the pillows — with a reversible weave that fold is a deliberate contrast band instead of an accidental view of the back.
