luxurious feel
Which size do I need?
Faux fur is heavier than it looks, so size up for warmth and size down for styling. A big fur throw is a serious blanket. A small one is an accent that happens to be warm.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 39" × 63" | Over the back of an armchair, or across your lap at a desk in a cold room. Also the right size for a child's bed. |
| 51" × 63" | One adult on the sofa, fully wrapped, feet covered. The size most people mean when they say they want a fur throw. |
| 63" × 79" | Two people sharing, or laid across a double or queen bed as the top layer. This one is genuinely heavy, which is the point. |
People who buy the small one for a chair often end up buying the large one for the sofa a month later.
Will it shed, mat, or come out of the wash ruined?
Faux fur does not really shed after the first week — it mats, and matting is caused by heat, not by use. Every rule below is the same rule: keep it cool.
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Cold gentle machine wash, on its own. Line dry or air dry flat. Shake it hard once dry, then brush the pile with your hand or a wide-tooth comb to lift it | Hot water, tumble drying, fabric softener and ironing. Heat melts the fiber tips and they fuse — that is the crunchy, clumped texture on an old fur throw, and it does not reverse |
Expect a small amount of loose fiber in the first few days and in the first wash. That is the surface pile releasing what was never anchored properly, and it stops. The step people skip is brushing the pile out once it is dry. Ten seconds with a wide-tooth comb and it goes back to looking new; leave it and it dries flat in whatever direction it settled.
The one blanket in the house that everybody fights over.
Every home has a hierarchy of blankets and it becomes obvious the moment two people sit down at the same time. There is the good one, and then there are three others nobody chooses. The good one gets claimed by whoever sits down first, moved to the bedroom when someone is unwell, and quietly taken out to the car for a road trip. Nothing about this is planned. It happens because one blanket is warmer and nicer to touch than the others, and everybody works that out within a week.

Pile length and backing are what separate this from a cheap fur throw
Two things decide whether a faux fur throw is worth owning. The first is pile density — how many fibers per square inch. Sparse pile lets you see the backing between the strands, which is what makes a budget fur throw look immediately synthetic, and it also means less trapped air and less warmth. Dense pile stands up on its own and reads as depth rather than as fabric with hair glued to it.
The second is the backing. A stiff woven backing makes a throw that stands away from you in board-like folds, no matter how soft the face is. A soft, flexible backing lets the whole thing drape and wrap, which is the difference between a throw you sit under and a throw you wrap around your shoulders and walk to the kitchen in. It is also why the reverse side matters: on a good fur throw you can use either face against you.
- Espresso — deep brown. The most furniture-like of the five, and the easiest with leather, walnut and tan.
- Shadow — cool deep grey. The safest choice in a modern room, and the one that hides everyday marks best.
- Rose Blush — soft warm pink. Reads as a deliberate accent rather than a neutral, and it is the one people buy for a bedroom.
- Ivory Cream — pale and high-impact. Looks luxurious and shows everything, so it belongs on a bed or a chair rather than under a dog.
- Cosy Blue — muted blue-grey. Softer than Shadow and the pick if the room already has navy or denim in it.
- 39" × 63" — the chair size. Drapes over a back and one arm without touching the floor.
- 51" × 63" — the sofa size. One adult, wrapped, with feet covered.
- 63" × 79" — the bed size. Heavy enough to be the whole top layer, and enough to share.
