Which size do I order for my table?
Measure the tabletop first, then pick the size that gives you a few inches of overhang on each side. Seven sizes sounds like a lot until you realise they fall into three obvious groups.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 24"×24" or 35"×35" | You're covering a side table, a nightstand, a plant stand or a small square bistro table — or you want it as a layer under a centrepiece rather than a full cover. |
| 35"×55", 39"×55" or 43"×67" | You have a rectangular dining table seating four to six. Pick 35"×55" for a narrow apartment table, 43"×67" if chairs tuck under a longer one. |
| 47"×47" or 55"×55" | Your table is square, or round. A square cloth over a round table is the standard move — the corners drape and it looks intentional. |
If you're between two sizes, take the larger one. A cloth that's slightly too big drapes; one that's slightly too small looks like a placemat that got ambitious.
What happens the first time someone spills red wine on it?
Cotton is the material that forgives you, provided you get to it before it dries. The busy monstera print also does you a favour — a leaf pattern hides the aftermath of a dinner far better than plain white ever will.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Blotting a fresh spill with a dry cloth. Cool machine wash. Ironing on the reverse while slightly damp. | Rubbing a stain, which drives it into the weave. Hot water on anything protein-based. Bleach, which will lift the green out of the leaves. |
To clean: blot, rinse the spot under a cold tap from the back of the fabric, then wash cool on a normal cycle. The step people skip is rinsing from the back — pushing water through the wrong way forces the stain out rather than deeper in, and it takes ten seconds.
Cotton creases. Pull it out of the machine while damp, spread it straight onto the table, and most of the creasing settles by dinner without an iron.
The table stops being furniture and starts being a place you set.
A bare table is fine right up until the moment you have people over, and then it's obviously bare — scratches on show, rings from the last mug, the whole thing echoing every time someone puts a glass down. You end up putting out mats that don't match and a runner that's too short. A tablecloth in a monstera leaf print fixes all of that in one motion, and it does something a plain cloth doesn't: it puts something green in the room in the middle of winter.

Cotton is why it drapes instead of sitting there
Polyester tablecloths have a tell: they hover. They hold a stiff shape at the corners, they slide when someone leans on the table, and they feel faintly plastic under a forearm. Cotton has weight and it has grip. It falls over the table edge in a soft line, it stays where you put it, and it takes a crease when you fold it — which sounds like a downside until you realise a fabric that creases is a fabric that also drapes. Cotton is also the reason spills come out. A natural fibre releases pigment under cold water in a way that a synthetic weave, which traps it on the surface of the filament, does not.
How each group of sizes actually gets used
- 24"×24" — the small square. Side tables, a plant stand, or draped diagonally under a bowl of fruit on a bigger surface.
- 35"×35" and 47"×47" — the square-table sizes, and the two that work best over a round table where the corners hang and give you the drape.
- 35"×55" and 39"×55" — apartment dining. Four seats, chairs tucked in, a few inches of overhang so it doesn't ride up when someone pulls a chair out.
- 43"×67" — the long rectangle for six. This is the one you want if the table is where homework, laptops and dinner all happen.
- 55"×55" — the largest square. Big square tables, or a generous drop on a round table where you want the cloth almost to the seat.
