Which size — sofa throw or something that covers a bed?

How do I wash it without wrecking the pattern?
Cotton is the easy part — it is heat and softener that cause the problems people blame on the fabric.

Shake it out and fold it while it is still faintly damp and it will settle without needing an iron. If you do press it, keep the iron moving and use a cool setting. The step people skip: washing it alone the first time. Woven cotton in a strong colour can release a little dye on the first cycle, and a lone wash is a great deal simpler than explaining a beige duvet cover that is now faintly auburn.
Loose threads happen with woven cotton. Snip them level with the surface — never pull.

Here the mandala is built from the weave itself, with the colours reversing face to face. There is nothing sitting on the surface to rub off, which is why both sides are finished sides and why the design survives the wash cycle it will get if it lives on a sofa. Cotton is the right fibre for that job too — it breathes, so it works over a bed in summer rather than becoming the thing you kick off at 2am, and it gets softer with washing instead of pilling.
