How long should the runner be for your table?

What happens when someone spills red wine on it?
Treat it like a tablecloth, not like a placemat, and deal with spills while they are still wet. The tassels are the part that needs the care — the cloth itself is straightforward.

Blot a spill first, never rub — rubbing pushes it through the weave. Then wash cool and line dry. The step everyone skips: comb the tassels out straight with your fingers while the runner is still damp. Two minutes there and the fringe dries in clean parallel lines; leave it and it dries in matted clumps you cannot undo.

Practically, the fringe also weighs the ends slightly, so the runner sits flatter and shifts less when someone reaches across for the gravy. It does mean the ends are the part that wears — which is why they need combing out rather than tumbling.
