16"×24" or 20"×31"?

Measure the floor space directly in front of the shower or bath — the mat wants to sit where two wet feet land, with room to take a second step. Same stripe, same absorbency in both; you are choosing footprint, not quality.

Choose If this sounds like you
16"×24" A small bathroom or ensuite where the door swings inward and anything bigger gets caught underneath it. Also the size for beside a basin.
20"×31" A family bathroom, or anyone stepping out of a full-length bath rather than a shower tray, where the water lands over a wider area.

Two of the small one often beats one large — one at the shower, one at the basin, and they wash together.

How do I stop a bath mat going musty?

A bath mat does not smell because it got wet. It smells because it stayed wet. An absorbent mat left flat on a cold tiled floor in a room with the door shut has no way to dry out, and that is the whole problem.

Works on Avoid
Tile, vinyl, sealed stone and timber bathroom floors, in front of a shower, a bath, a basin, or just inside a laundry door Leaving it flat on the floor all day in a windowless bathroom, bleach, high tumble heat, and fabric softener — softener coats the pile and absorbency is the first thing to go

Care: cool gentle machine wash with like colours, no bleach, no fabric softener. Low tumble or line dry. The step people skip — hang it over the bath edge or a rail after the last shower of the morning. Ten seconds, and it is the single thing that decides whether the mat still smells clean in six months.

You step out and the floor stays dry, instead of the mat just moving the puddle around.

The failure mode of a cheap bath mat is instantly recognisable. Someone showers, steps out, and the mat is soaked through in one go. The second person in gets a cold wet flannel underfoot, water tracks out onto the hallway floor, and by evening the whole thing has a smell. What you want instead is a mat that takes the water off your feet and holds it, so that the person after you — and the floor between the bathroom and the bedroom — does not have to deal with it.

Why the stripe is a construction detail, not a pattern choice

The ribbed stripe running across this mat is not printed on. It is built into the surface, which means the mat has raised lines and channels rather than one flat plane of pile. That does two useful things underfoot. The raised ribs are what your feet actually press into, so water gets squeezed off the sole and down the sides. And the channels between them give that water somewhere to go, away from the contact point, spread across a wider area of the mat.

A flat mat has to soak everything up at the exact spot you are standing, which is why it saturates in one shower and stays sodden. A ribbed surface distributes the load. It also has more surface area exposed to the air, so once you hang it up it dries faster than a flat mat of the same size — which loops straight back to the musty problem.

  • Grey — the neutral. Sits against white tile and chrome without commentary, and hides the grey water marks a bathroom floor produces.
  • Blue — clean and cool. The classic bathroom colour, and the one that looks right against white subway tile.
  • Teal — deeper and greener. For a bathroom with brass taps or a darker tile where pale blue would look washed out.
  • Brown — warm and earthy. The pick for a bathroom with timber, stone or beige tile, and the most forgiving on marks between washes.

Both sizes come in all four colours, so a small ensuite and a main bathroom can run the same shade without matching sizes.
