How long should it be?
The rule that never fails: measure your table's length and take the size that leaves roughly 6 to 12 inches hanging off each end. Every size is 14 inches wide, so the width question is already answered — you are only choosing the drop.
Eight lengths: 14"×47", 14"×63", 14"×71", 14"×83", 14"×94", 14"×106", 14"×118" and 14"×138". The short end suits a coffee table, a sideboard or a hallway console. The middle sizes cover most four- to eight-seat dining tables. The two longest are for banquet-length tables and buffet setups where the runner has to travel.

Care: cool gentle machine wash, like colours, no bleach. Line dry or low tumble. Warm iron while damp. The step people skip — give it a firm shake and hang it straight away rather than leaving it balled in the machine. Linen sets creases fast, and the ones it sets while sitting wet in a drum are the hardest to argue with.

The trade is that linen creases, and it is meant to. The soft fold lines that appear after a wash are the look, not a fault. If you want it crisper, iron it while it is still damp. If you want it relaxed, hang it and leave it alone.

- Ash Garden — a cool grey. The pick for modern rooms with black legs, glass or stone, and the one that looks least like a seasonal decoration in January.
