Café Lace, Sage Grace or Ash Garden?

All three are the same runner in the same linen — the Colour choice is only about what your table is already made of. Match the undertone of the wood or the stone and the runner settles in; fight it and it looks like it was borrowed from another room.

Choose If this sounds like you
Café Lace Warm oak, walnut or a table that has gone honey-coloured with age. The one to pick if your room runs to brass, candles and terracotta.
Sage Grace You want a little colour without committing to a colour. Sits well against pale wood and anyone whose windowsill is mostly plants.
Ash Garden Grey-toned rooms, black metal legs, marble or a dark stained top. The quietest of the three and the easiest to keep dressed year round.

Plenty of people keep two and swap them when the table gets a proper setting.

How long should it be?

The rule that never fails: measure your table's length and take the size that leaves roughly 6 to 12 inches hanging off each end. Every size is 14 inches wide, so the width question is already answered — you are only choosing the drop.

Eight lengths: 14"×47", 14"×63", 14"×71", 14"×83", 14"×94", 14"×106", 14"×118" and 14"×138". The short end suits a coffee table, a sideboard or a hallway console. The middle sizes cover most four- to eight-seat dining tables. The two longest are for banquet-length tables and buffet setups where the runner has to travel.

Works on Avoid
Dining tables, sideboards, consoles, dressers, kitchen islands, a chest of drawers that needs softening, and laid across a bed foot as a runner Tables narrower than about 20 inches — a 14-inch runner leaves no margin either side and reads as a cloth that missed. Also keep the ends clear of open flame.

Care: cool gentle machine wash, like colours, no bleach. Line dry or low tumble. Warm iron while damp. The step people skip — give it a firm shake and hang it straight away rather than leaving it balled in the machine. Linen sets creases fast, and the ones it sets while sitting wet in a drum are the hardest to argue with.

One strip down the middle, and the table looks arranged instead of empty.

A dining table with nothing on it always reads as unused. You notice the bare span, the chair backs, the fact that the last thing to sit there was a stack of post. A runner fixes it in one movement, without the commitment of a full cloth that has to be laundered every time someone eats. It gives the centre of the table a defined strip — somewhere for the bowl, the candles, the jug of whatever — and leaves the wood visible at the place settings, which is usually the point of having a nice table in the first place.

Linen behaves differently, and that is why it works here

Linen is a stiffer, drier fibre than cotton. On a table runner that turns out to be the whole trick. It lies flat instead of rippling, it holds a straight edge down the length of the table, and the ends hang with a bit of weight rather than curling up at the corners the way a light woven cotton does. It also does not slide. A runner that shifts every time someone reaches across is a runner you end up straightening ten times a meal.

The trade is that linen creases, and it is meant to. The soft fold lines that appear after a wash are the look, not a fault. If you want it crisper, iron it while it is still damp. If you want it relaxed, hang it and leave it alone.

  • Café Lace — a warm, coffee-toned neutral. Against a mid or dark wood table it disappears into the same family and lets the tableware do the talking. The most forgiving of the three on a table that gets daily use.
  • Sage Grace — a muted green that reads as neutral from across the room and as colour up close. Works hardest in a pale or white-painted dining room where a brown runner would look heavy.
  • Ash Garden — a cool grey. The pick for modern rooms with black legs, glass or stone, and the one that looks least like a seasonal decoration in January.
