Which size do I need for my table?
Measure the tabletop, then add the drop you want hanging over the edge — about 8 inches each side reads generous without pooling on chairs. All three sizes carry the same lemon-and-leaf print at the same scale, so the only thing changing is how much table it covers.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 39"×55" | A small kitchen table for two, a breakfast nook, or a console you want dressed without a floor-length skirt. |
| 55"×71" | The standard four-to-six seater most dining rooms actually have. Covers the top with an even drop all round. |
| 55"×87" | A long table that seats eight, or a table with the leaf permanently in because someone always stays for dinner. |
If you are between two sizes, size up. A short cloth on a long table looks like a mistake; a long one looks deliberate.
Will it survive an actual dinner?
This is a cloth meant to be used, not admired from a distance. The lemon print is busy enough to forgive a stray drop of olive oil until wash day.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Rectangular and oval dining tables, kitchen islands, long console tables, folding trestle tables for parties, outdoor tables on a still day | Round tables much wider than the short edge, tables where the drop would sit in a lit candle, and unsupervised toddler craft sessions with permanent marker |
Care: cool machine wash on a gentle cycle with like colors, no bleach, low tumble or line dry. Warm iron on the reverse while slightly damp if you want the creases gone. The step people skip — take it off the line before it is bone dry. Damp fabric drops its fold lines by itself and saves you the ironing entirely.
The table stops being the thing you clear and starts being the thing you set.
Most dining tables spend six days a week as a surface for mail, laptops and half-finished homework, and one evening pretending to be a dining table. A bare top makes that obvious. Every scratch, every water ring, every scuff from a chair back is right there under the serving dish. Throwing a cloth over it does more than hide the damage — it changes what the table is for. Lemons and leaves, scattered on a pale ground, read like summer even in February.

Why the print scale is the part that matters
A lemon print goes wrong in two directions. Too small and it turns into visual noise from standing height — you see texture, not fruit. Too large and a single lemon takes over the middle of the table and fights with whatever you put on it. This one sits between the two: fruit big enough to read as fruit from the doorway, spaced loosely enough that a bowl, a board and four plates all land on open ground rather than on top of a motif. The leaves do the connective work, running the green through the gaps so the cloth reads as a whole pattern instead of scattered spots.
The other thing a good print does is hide the ordinary business of eating. Crumbs, a smear of butter, the ring left by a cold glass — on a plain white cloth each of those is an event. Here they disappear into the pattern until you get around to clearing.
- 39"×55" — the compact one. On a two-seater it covers the top with a modest overhang, which suits a small room where a long drop would make things feel crowded.
- 55"×71" — the default. Fits the six-seater dining table most homes are built around, with enough fall at the ends that the corners hang properly rather than sitting flat.
- 55"×87" — the long one. Built for the table that gets extended at Christmas and never quite goes back. Also the one to pick for a buffet or a trestle set up along a wall.
