Which Size — sofa throw, or something that goes on the bed?
The three sizes are three different jobs, and only one of them is a throw in the decorative sense. Decide who is going to be under it and the size answers itself.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 39"×59" | One person on the sofa with their feet up, or a blanket that lives in the car and comes out at the beach and the football. |
| 59"×79" | The one people fight over. Long enough that a tall adult is covered head to toe, and wide enough for two if nobody is greedy. |
| 79"×91" | A bed layer. Goes over a double or queen as a top blanket, or folded across the foot for the extra layer you pull up at 3am. |
If it is for a sofa where two people watch television, buy the 59"×79" and save yourself the argument.
Will the waffle texture flatten out in the wash?
Waffle is a structure, not a finish — but heat can crush it, and that is what ruins most of them.
| Works | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Cool machine wash on a gentle cycle, washed on its own or with soft items. | Washing it with zips, hooks and buttons. Waffle has open cells and things hook straight into them. |
| Line drying, or a short low tumble to lift the cells back up. | A long hot dry, which presses the waffle flat and takes the warmth out with it. |
| A cool iron on the reverse if you want it crisp for a bed. | Fabric softener, which coats the fibres and kills the loft that makes waffle warm. |
The step people skip: shaking it out hard before it dries. Thirty seconds of snapping it open re-opens every cell, and the blanket comes off the line looking like it did new instead of like a flat sheet.
Warm at nine in the evening, not too warm at midnight.
Most blankets solve one temperature. The fleece one is glorious for twenty minutes and then you are sweating under it and it goes on the floor. The thin cotton one looks nice folded over the arm of the sofa and does nothing at all when the heating clicks off. So you end up cycling between two blankets in one evening, which is a stupid way to watch television. A waffle weave sits in the useful middle: warm because of the air it traps, breathable because that air can move.

The waffle is a structure, and the structure is the product
The grid of raised squares is not decoration. Each cell is a small pocket that holds still air against you, and still air is what actually keeps a person warm — no blanket generates heat, it only slows down the heat leaving you. What makes waffle different from a dense fleece is that the walls between the cells are open enough for moisture to escape. You get the insulation without the clammy overheating, which is why waffle turns up in hotel bathrobes and hospital blankets rather than only in living rooms.
It also has a practical advantage that shows up after a year: waffle weave dries fast and does not mat. Fleece pills and goes shiny where you sit; a waffle grid keeps its texture because the texture is structural rather than a brushed surface that can be worn away.
The four colors
- Grey — the one that goes on any sofa without a conversation. Reads as texture rather than color, and shows lint least.
- Blue — cool and calm. The bedroom pick, and the one that looks right in a room with white linen and pale timber.
- Pink — soft and warm-toned. Lifts a room that is otherwise all greys and whites, and the usual choice when it is going in a child's room.
- Red — the only bold one. Buy it if you want the blanket to be a deliberate spot of color on a neutral sofa rather than a blanket that blends in.
