Dark or light — which one against my table?
Coasters only get used if they are visible, so the right choice is the one that contrasts with your table rather than the one that matches it. A pale coaster on a pale table becomes invisible and everyone puts the glass down beside it. Both options are the same six-piece set of wooden coasters; the only decision is which way the contrast runs.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| Ebony Blackwood | Your table is oak, ash, pine or white. You want the coasters to be obvious from across the room, and you would rather they read as a deliberate dark accent than as furniture-coloured discs. |
| Natural Beech | You have a dark walnut table, a black coffee table, or a glass top. Also the pick if the room is already warm and wooden and you want the set to blend into it. |
Six of one covers a dining table. Two sets in the two finishes covers the dining table and the coffee table, and you stop carrying them between rooms.
Wood and wet glasses — does that actually work?
Yes, provided you treat them as coasters and not as saucers. A wooden coaster takes the ring off your table and takes the heat off your table, which is the whole job. What it will not tolerate is sitting in a puddle overnight or going through a dishwasher, because that is how any wood cups and splits.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Cold drinks that sweat, mugs of tea, wine glasses, tumblers, a small candle jar. | A pan straight off the hob. Coasters are not trivets and never have been. |
| A quick wipe with a damp cloth, then dried straight away. | Soaking them in the sink, or putting them in the dishwasher. |
| Stacking them dry, in a drawer or out on the table. | Stacking them still damp, which marks the face of the one underneath. |
Wipe, dry, stack. If a glass has left a pool on one, tip it off and dry both faces rather than just the top — drying the underside is the step people skip, and it is what stops a coaster curling slightly and rocking on the table afterwards.
Six pale rings on the good table, and then never again.
Water rings arrive quietly. Someone puts a cold glass down during a conversation, nobody moves it for an hour, and by the time you notice there is a white halo in the finish that no amount of wiping touches. The frustrating part is that the household usually owns coasters — they are just in a drawer, or there are four of them for six people, or they are the free ones from a brewery and nobody wants them out. A set of six wooden coasters that look decent enough to leave on the table is the entire fix, because the only coaster that works is the one already sitting there.

Why wood, and why the edge profile matters
Wood does two things cork and plastic do not. It is stiff, so the coaster stays flat and does not travel with the glass when you lift it — no more picking a soggy cork disc off the bottom of your tumbler mid-sentence. And it has real thickness, so it lifts the base of a cold glass clear of the table surface and the condensation collects on the coaster rather than wicking sideways onto the wood underneath.
The Japanese-style shaping keeps the edges clean and the profile low. That sounds cosmetic, but a low, clean edge is what lets you slide a glass on and off one-handed instead of catching the rim of the coaster and flipping it.
The two finishes on a table
- Ebony Blackwood — deep near-black with the grain still visible up close. Reads as a graphic dark circle on a light table, and it is the more forgiving of the two with tea and coffee marks.
- Natural Beech — pale, warm and open-grained. Lifts a dark table, and it is the one that ends up looking like part of the tableware rather than an accessory.
