One size, three colours — which colour?

The Size option is 13"×13" and nothing else, so the colour is the only real decision. At 13" square these are cloth-sized rather than tea-towel-sized, which means they get grabbed constantly and washed constantly. Pick accordingly.

Choose If this sounds like you
Grey These are going to be used for actual wiping — counters, spills, hands — and you want the one that looks least tired after a fortnight.
Light Coffee Your kitchen runs warm — oak, terracotta, brass — and grey would sit in it looking cold.
Cream Colour You want them visible and clean-looking on the counter, and you are the sort of person who washes them before they need it.

A darker colour for the messy jobs and a lighter one for drying is a system that survives contact with real life.

Does the honeycomb weave really absorb more, or is it just texture?

It genuinely does, and the reason is geometry rather than material. A honeycomb weave raises and recesses the surface into a grid of small pockets, which increases the surface area in contact with a wet counter and gives the water somewhere to go.

Works on Avoid
Wiping counters, drying hands, mopping a spill, drying produce Fabric softener, which fills the honeycomb pockets and kills the absorbency
A warm machine wash with the rest of the kitchen cloths Washing them with anything that sheds heavy lint
Hanging or laying flat to dry, spread out Leaving one balled up damp by the sink, which is where the smell starts

The step people skip: give it one wash before you use it. The honeycomb does not open up properly until the finish has been washed out, and a lot of people write a new cloth off after one unimpressive attempt.

Wipe the counter once and have it actually be dry.

The failure everyone knows: you wipe down a wet worktop, and instead of picking the water up the cloth spreads it into a thin film that then dries into streaks. You go over it again. It gets worse. Eventually you use kitchen paper, which is what you were trying to avoid. A flat, smooth cloth pushes water. A honeycomb one traps it, which means one pass and the surface is genuinely dry rather than smeared.

13" square is a deliberate size

Kitchen cloths get made in two shapes, and they do different work. A long rectangle is a drying towel — you drape it over a shoulder or a rail and use it two-handed for dishes. A 13" square is a wiping cloth. It folds into quarters and sits flat in your palm, which is what you want when you are going round a hob or getting into the corner behind the tap, and it wrings out properly because there is not enough of it to hold a reservoir of dirty water in the middle. It also means a stack of them takes up almost no drawer space, so you can afford to change them daily rather than nursing one along for a week. The honeycomb texture adds a bit of grip on top of that, which helps when you are wiping something greasy rather than just wet.

  • Grey — mid neutral grey. The practical one. Handles coffee, tea and cooking marks without showing every job it has done.
  • Light Coffee — a soft warm tan. Sits naturally in a wood-and-cream kitchen and hides the same kind of marks as the grey while looking less utilitarian.
  • Cream Colour — the palest of the three, and the one that looks best folded on an open shelf or next to the sink. Shows more, but reads as clean.
