Measure your tabletop, then add roughly 8" to each dimension for a modest overhang, or 12" if you want it to drape properly. The three square sizes and the six rectangles are doing quite different jobs.

If you are between two sizes, go longer. A cloth that is slightly too big looks generous, a cloth that is slightly too small looks like a placemat.
Red wine, olive oil, a candle — what happens to a checkered cloth?
A check pattern is the most forgiving surface a tablecloth can have, because the grid breaks up anything that lands on it. Even so, what you do in the first five minutes decides whether a spill is a memory or a permanent feature.

The step people skip: hang it back on the table while it is still faintly damp. The weight of the fabric pulls most of the creases out and you save yourself the ironing entirely.

Most dining tables are not beautiful. They are a serviceable slab with a coffee ring near one corner and a gouge from something a child did in 2019. You are not going to replace it, and you have stopped seeing it, but everyone who comes over sees it. A checkered cloth covers the lot and replaces it with a pattern that has been doing this job in kitchens for two hundred years. It is the cheapest way to make a room look like somebody lives there on purpose.
Why a check has to be woven straight to work
A check pattern is unforgiving in a way a floral never is. Every line on it is a straight line, so the eye immediately catches any that isn't. If the grid drifts off-square, or the pattern sits at a slight angle to the weave, the cloth looks wrong on the table and no amount of smoothing fixes it — the check will not line up with the table edge. A properly aligned check does the opposite: it makes the table look squarer than it is, and it gives you a natural grid to lay plates and glasses against. That is also why the check reads as heritage rather than novelty. It is the same logic as tile and brick, which is why it never dates.
- Mustard Yellow — warm and slightly earthy rather than bright. The one that makes a north-facing kitchen look sunnier, and it sits well with wood, brass and cream ceramics.
- Sage Green — soft grey-green. The quietest of the three and the easiest to live with every day rather than just for guests. Good against white walls and dark wood.
- Blush Pink — muted dusty pink with the sweetness pulled out. Reads warm and slightly vintage, and it is the one people are surprised by on a dining table.
