Cotton gauze is not terry — is that a problem?
It is the whole point, but only if you want what gauze does. Gauze is a light open weave, so it works by wicking and drying fast rather than by holding a lot of water in deep loops.

Run it through one cool wash before you use it. Gauze arrives with the weave still tight, and the first cycle is what opens it up and gives it the crinkle and the absorbency — skipping that is why people occasionally think a gauze towel does not work.
No fabric softener, ever. Softener fills the gaps in the weave, and with gauze those gaps are the entire mechanism.

The real problem with bathroom towels is not absorbency, it is Wednesday. A thick terry towel used at 7am in a room with a small window and an extractor fan that has never worked properly is still faintly damp at 7pm, and by the third day it has that flat mineral smell that no amount of hanging fixes. Cotton gauze sidesteps that entirely. The open weave holds very little water in the fabric itself, so it dries out on the rail within a couple of hours — and a towel that dries fully does not develop a smell.
The gauze weave is why it gets softer and thinner in a good way
Terry towels are built from loops standing up off a base. Loops flatten, snag on rings and jewellery, and eventually the towel goes slick and stops drying you. Gauze has no pile at all — it is a light, slightly crinkled cotton weave, so there is nothing to crush. What happens instead is that it relaxes. Each wash opens the structure a little further, the crinkle deepens, and the towel gets softer and more absorbent rather than progressively more useless.
The other consequence is bulk. Gauze folds down to a fraction of the thickness of terry, which matters when your linen shelf is one shelf, and it packs into a bag without deciding to be the largest thing in there.
