What size does my dog take?
Measure along the spine, from the base of the neck to the base of the tail — that back length is what decides the size, not your dog's weight. Two dogs the same weight can be completely different lengths.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| S | A small dog with a short back — a terrier, a miniature breed, a puppy who currently fits in one arm. |
| M | The mid-size dog most people have — spaniel, cocker, working terrier, small poodle cross. The one that comes back from a walk soaked to the elbows. |
| L | A long-backed or big dog — retriever, collie, larger doodle. Anything where a bath towel only ever covers half the animal at once. |
Between sizes on a thick-coated dog, take the larger one. Coat volume adds length as well as girth.
Will my dog actually keep it on?
Most dogs tolerate a drying robe far better than they tolerate being rubbed with a towel, because nothing is being done to them — they can walk off and it comes too. The trick is the first thirty seconds.
| Works for | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Post-bath, muddy winter walks, beach and river swims, the back of the car, drying off before the groomer, keeping a wet dog off the sofa | Leaving it on an unsupervised dog for hours, hot washes, bleach, fabric softener, and high-heat tumble drying |
Put it on while the dog is still distracted by being wet, then walk away and let them move around in it — dogs that get fussed over immediately are the ones that try to shake it off. Wash cool on gentle, no softener, and tumble on low or line dry. The step people skip: washing it after muddy walks rather than just hanging it up. Mud dries in the pile and stops it absorbing, which is the actual reason a drying robe stops working.
Shake it out before it goes back in the cupboard, and don't put it away damp.
The wet dog goes in the robe instead of on the hallway wall.
Everyone with a dog knows the sequence. Rain walk, back door, one bath towel, and about forty seconds of vigorous rubbing before the dog decides it's a game and shakes — at which point the hall, the coats and you are wet, and the dog is still wet. A drying robe removes the wrestling entirely. It goes over the dog, the dog wanders off, and the drying happens over the next twenty minutes in the kitchen while you make a coffee. No pinning, no chasing, no damp dog on the sofa the second your back is turned.

Why contact time beats rubbing
A towel only dries a dog while you're actively moving it, and you can only cover one patch at a time. A robe works on a different principle: full-coat contact, held there for as long as the dog is wearing it. That's why it gets a thick double coat dry when a towel only ever gets the top layer — the water in the undercoat has somewhere to go and twenty minutes to get there, rather than four seconds and a hand pressing it back in.
It also solves the smell problem. Wet dog smell is a wet undercoat, sitting damp for hours. Dry the undercoat properly and the house smells like a house.
- Grey Cuddle — plain soft grey. The practical choice: mud and wet paw marks barely show between washes, and it doesn't look out of place hanging by the back door.
- Snuggly Stripes — the striped version. Picked by people who want the dog's robe to look like something rather than like laundry, and easier to spot in a car boot full of dark gear.
