A gauze robe is meant to hang, not to fit. Decide how much room you want around you, not what size you normally wear. Gauze has no stretch, so the ease comes from the cut.

Will a gauze robe actually dry me, or just get wet?

Gauze doesn't work like a towelling robe and shouldn't be judged like one — it takes moisture off the skin and then releases it into the air fast, rather than holding it. That's why it isn't clammy twenty minutes later.

Wash cool on gentle, no softener — softener fills the open weave and kills both the breathability and the crinkle. Tumble low briefly or line dry in shade. The step people skip: hanging it on a wide hanger rather than a hook. Gauze takes the shape of whatever it dries on, and a narrow hook leaves two permanent points in the shoulders.

Don't press it flat. The crinkled surface is the fabric doing its job, not a wrinkle to fix.

Towelling robes have one good minute. You put it on, it feels like a hotel, and then it's a damp weight across your shoulders that stays damp until someone remembers to hang it properly. Why the open weave changes how a robe behaves

Cotton gauze is built as loose layers rather than one tight cloth, and the gaps between those layers are the whole design. Air moves through them, which means moisture leaves rather than sitting against you. It also means the fabric adapts to the temperature instead of committing to one — warm enough over bare skin on a cool morning, cool enough that you're not sweating in it by ten. Towelling can only ever do one of those.

The second thing to know is that gauze improves with use. It arrives with a bit of body and washes into something looser and softer, and the crinkled surface deepens rather than flattening. A gauze robe at six months old is better than a new one, which is an unusual thing to be able to say.
