Which size gauze blanket?
Gauze is airy, so it reads smaller on a bed than a dense woven blanket of the same measurements — size up if you're deciding between the two. Otherwise it's a straightforward call.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 59"×79" | You want something to throw over yourself while you read, or a light summer cover for a single bed or a child's room. |
| 79"×91" | It's replacing the duvet entirely on hot nights on a double or queen, and two people need to be under it without a tug of war. |
Hot sleepers in a shared bed almost always regret buying the smaller one.
Isn't gauze too flimsy to last?
Cotton gauze looks delicate and isn't — it's layered, and layering is what gives it strength while keeping the air gaps. The thing that damages it isn't use, it's snagging and heat.
| Works for | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Hot sleepers, summer bedding, layering over a duvet, a light throw on a cane or timber chair, a picnic blanket, a nursery | Hot washes, bleach, fabric softener, hot tumble drying, washing it with zips or velcro, and ironing it flat |
Wash cool on gentle, alone or with soft items, and use less detergent than a normal load. Tumble on low and take it out while there's still a little dampness in it, or line dry in shade. The step people skip: not ironing it. The crinkle is the fabric — press it flat and you crush the air pockets that make gauze breathable in the first place. Shake it out, drape it, leave it alone.
If a thread pulls, snip it flush at the surface rather than drawing it out.
Covered, but not hot — which is the exact thing a duvet can't do in summer.
There's a stretch of the year where sleeping is a negotiation. Under the duvet you're too warm within twenty minutes. Out from under it you feel exposed and can't settle. Most people solve it by half-covering one leg and waking up three times. Cotton gauze is the fabric that fixes it: enough substance that you feel covered, enough open structure that heat and moisture pass straight through instead of building up against you. The garden-inspired print means the thing solving your July sleep problem also happens to be the nicest-looking layer on the bed.

What gauze actually is, and why it gets better
Gauze is a loose, open cotton weave, built up in layers rather than woven tight. Those layers are joined at intervals, which leaves small pockets of air between them — that's the whole mechanism. Air pockets mean it insulates a little in cool air and vents freely in warm air, and it's why the same blanket makes sense in April and August. It's also why it weighs almost nothing across your legs while still feeling like something is there.
The second thing gauze does is improve. A tight weave is at its best on day one and slowly degrades. Gauze arrives with a little structure in it and washes soft — the crinkled surface deepens, the drape gets looser, and after a summer it feels like something you've had for years. Which is a much better direction of travel than the other way round.
- 59"×79" — the throw size. Light enough to carry to a garden chair or fold into a bag, and the right proportion for a single bed or a kid's room in summer.
- 79"×91" — the bed size. Wide enough to be the only thing on a double or queen through the hot months, with enough over the sides that neither person ends up uncovered.
