Which size sherpa do I need?
Sherpa is heavy and warm, so the size decision is really about who is under it and where. Too small and it becomes a lap rug you keep repositioning. Too large on a sofa and it is a chore to fold, so it never gets folded.

Does the sherpa side go matted after a few washes?
It mats from heat and from softener, not from use. The curled pile that makes sherpa look like fleece wool is exactly what a hot dryer melts flat, and once it is flat it does not come back.

Wash it alone, cool, and air dry or tumble on the lowest heat available. The skipped step is the shake: give it a hard shake before drying and again once it is dry, which lifts the curl back up. A sherpa dried in a lump stays in that lump.

There is a particular kind of cold that happens between about six and eight in the evening — the house has cooled, nobody wants to commit to the heating yet, and everyone is sitting slightly hunched. Two faces, two jobs
A sherpa blanket is a laminate: a smooth, embossed face on one side and a curled sherpa pile on the other. That is not a styling decision, it is how the warmth works. The dense curl traps a thick layer of still air against you — still air is the actual insulator, the fibre just holds it in place. The smooth shell-embossed face on the other side seals that layer in and stops draughts pulling it away.
It also gives you two temperatures from one blanket. Sherpa side down against you is the maximum-warmth configuration. Flip it, and the smooth embossed face against your skin is noticeably cooler while still cutting the draught — useful in a room that starts cold and ends up overheated once everyone is in it.
The shell embossing on the smooth side is pressed into the pile rather than printed, so it holds its pattern through washes and reads as texture rather than as a picture.
