Absorbency is easy. Any thick cloth will take on water. The part that decides whether a drying mat is still in use six months from now is whether it dries out between washing-ups, because a mat that is still damp when the next round of dishes lands never gets ahead, and a mat that never gets ahead is the one that starts to smell. What you want is a surface that pulls water in off the base of a pan quickly, spreads it through the mat rather than pooling it in one spot, and then lets it evaporate off a wide flat area. That is also what keeps the counter underneath dry, which is the actual point — a mat that holds water against a laminate seam is worse than no mat.
Choosing a colour for your counter
- Black — the practical pick. Against a pale quartz or white counter it reads as a deliberate dark rectangle rather than a cloth someone left out, and coffee and turmeric marks are invisible on it.
- beige — the one that disappears. If your worktop is oak, cream or warm stone, this blends into the run of the counter and the mandala shows as a soft raised pattern rather than a contrast.
- White — crispest of the three and the one that shows the mandala most clearly. Best in a kitchen with dark counters or navy cabinets, where it works as a bright break in the surface. Accept that it will need washing more often than the other two.
