The backing holds against a hard, flat, sealed surface — texture and moisture underneath are what defeat it.

Wash cool on a gentle cycle, line dry or tumble on no heat. The step people skip: hang it over the bath edge between showers rather than leaving it flat on the floor. A mat drying on both sides is a mat that doesn't develop a smell, and it costs you two seconds.

The tell of a bad bath mat is the puddle beside it. Water runs off you faster than a thin mat can take it in, so it spreads outward, and by the time the second person has showered there's a damp ring around the whole thing and a cold slick where you put your foot down. Flocked pile works differently — the fibres stand upright and dense, so water goes straight down into the mat rather than sideways across the floor. You get a dry step-out and a dry floor, which is the entire job of the thing.
Why flocking behaves differently to a woven mat
A woven mat has loops lying at an angle, and once they crush they stay crushed. Flocked fibres are set perpendicular to the base, packed tight and standing on end, which gives you two things: a very dense surface for the amount of material, and a pile that springs back after being stood on rather than laying flat in a footprint. That's why a flocked mat still looks even after a few months while a cheap woven one has an obvious worn patch in the middle.
The trade-off is that flocking hates heat. A hot tumble dry will shrink the base and stiffen the backing, and once the backing has gone hard it never grips properly again. Cool wash, cold dry, and it holds up for years.
- Modern Mosaic — broken geometric blocks in mixed tones. The busiest of the four and the one to pick if the bathroom is entirely white and needs something to look at.
- Classic Plaid — a straightforward check. Quiet, familiar, and the safest option if the room already has a patterned blind or tiled feature wall.
- Ripple Blend — soft blended bands with no hard edges. Reads almost as texture from the doorway rather than as a pattern.
- Canyon Streaks — warm banded streaks running the length of the mat. The most directional design, and it makes a narrow bathroom look longer.
