Which size mat does my bathroom actually need?

Wash cool on a gentle cycle and either line dry or tumble on no heat. The step people skip: heat is what destroys a gripped backing. One hot tumble dry and it goes brittle and stops holding, and no amount of washing brings it back.

You stop putting a folded towel on the floor because the mat is already soaked.

The problem with most bath mats isn't day one. It's day four, when the mat is still faintly damp from the last three showers, the floor around it is damp too, and the whole bathroom has that heavy smell. Thin mats can't hold much water and can't get rid of what they hold. A deep plush pile does both — it takes the water down off the surface into the pile, and the open structure lets it evaporate between uses instead of holding it against the tile. The floral cut into the surface isn't only decorative either: the raised pattern gives the pile texture, so water doesn't just sit in a flat mat.

Why pile depth is the thing that decides this purchase

Shallow-pile mats feel fine underfoot for a month. Then the pile crushes where you always step — right in the middle, in a foot-shaped patch — and it never comes back up. From that point on the mat has two thicknesses, absorbs unevenly, and looks tired even when it's clean. Deep plush has enough length in the fibre to recover after each wash, so the middle doesn't flatten into a permanent footprint before the edges have aged at all.

The other half of it is the backing. A bath mat is one of the few textiles in the house that has to be both soft and grippy, and those two properties fight each other. Keep the wash cool and the dryer cold and both survive together.

Sage Daisy — soft muted green with the daisy motif in relief. The one that reads as a plant rather than a pattern, and the easiest match for a bathroom with wood or brass.
Ash Flower — grey ground, tonal flower. The quietest of the three, and the one that hides everyday floor dust between washes.
