When you are between two lengths, take the longer one. A short cloth on a long table looks like a mistake; a long one just hangs lower.
Will it sit flat, or will it slide and crease?
A tablecloth misbehaves for two reasons: creases from the fold, and no weight at the edge. Both are fixable in the first ten minutes, and neither is a reason to give up on it.

Wash cold, tumble low, and here is the step everyone skips: put it on the table while it is very slightly damp. It relaxes into shape as it finishes drying and you skip the iron entirely.
