M, XL or 3XL — which one do I take?

A bathrobe is not a jacket, and you are not trying to get a close fit. It's a wrap garment with a tie, so it forgives a lot in either direction — the only genuinely wrong choice is one that won't cross over your front comfortably.

Choose If this sounds like you
M You take a small or medium in most things and you want the robe to stay out of your way — sleeves clear of the sink, hem clear of the stairs.
XL You're a large or extra large, or you're a medium who thinks a robe should be something you disappear into. This is the safe middle pick and the one most households reach for.
3XL You want real generosity — a deep overlap at the front, room to pull it on over pyjamas on a cold morning, and no tugging when you sit down.

There's no L or 2XL in this run, so if you sit between sizes, size up. Nobody has ever complained a bathrobe was too roomy.

Won't fleece go bobbly and full of static?

Fleece pills for two reasons — heat and friction — and both happen in the laundry, not on your back. How you wash it decides almost everything about how it looks in six months.

Do this Not this
Cool wash, gentle cycle, robe turned inside out Hot washes, which melt and mat the pile permanently
Wash it with other soft items, or on its own Loading it in with towels, jeans and zips — abrasion is what raises the bobbles
Air dry, or tumble on the lowest setting A hot dryer, or an iron anywhere near it

The step everyone skips: tie the belt loosely before it goes in the machine. An untied belt whips around the drum, wraps the robe into a rope and drags the pile against itself for the whole cycle. That single habit is worth more than any fabric treatment.

The five minutes after a shower stop being the coldest part of the day.

The gap between the shower and being dressed is a miserable little window in winter. You stand on a damp bathmat with a towel that's already wet from yesterday, going faintly blue, hurrying into clothes before you're properly dry. A fleece robe changes the order of operations: you get warm immediately, and you get dry as a side effect while you make coffee or find your socks.

Why fleece beats a towelling robe for this particular job

Traditional towelling is built to absorb, which sounds ideal until you own one. It soaks up water, holds it, and becomes a heavy cold thing hanging on the back of the door that never fully dries in a bathroom without a window. Fleece works the other way: the raised pile traps a layer of warm air against your skin from the second you put it on, and it stays light because it isn't holding a litre of bathwater.

That's why a fleece robe is warm instantly rather than eventually, why it dries out between uses even in a small steamy bathroom, and why it doubles happily as something you wear on the sofa on a cold Sunday — which is what most of these actually get used for, whatever the name on the label says.

Six colours, and who tends to pick them

  • Purple — deep and slightly plum-toned rather than bright. The one that doesn't look like hotel stock.
  • White — the spa look. Cleanest against a tiled bathroom, and the least forgiving of a mascara smudge.
  • Sapphire — a rich, saturated blue. The most striking of the set and the one that holds its colour best against a white door.
  • Grey — the household default. Nobody has an opinion about it, which is precisely why it's the one that gets worn every day.
  • Pink — soft and warm-toned. Reads cosy rather than girlish once it's on.
  • Navy — dark and practical. The best choice if the robe is going to be worn over breakfast with children and coffee in the vicinity.
