Which size fits your table — with the drop you actually want?
Measure your table top, then decide how far down you want the cloth to hang, and add twice that. Most people want somewhere between 6 and 10 inches of drop each side: enough to cover the table edge, not so much that it lands in a lap.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 39"×55" | A small kitchen table, a table for two, or a card table you want to stop looking like a card table. Also the size for a narrow console in a hallway. |
| 55"×55" | You have a square table, or a round one. Square cloths work on round tables — the corners drop into points, which is a look people choose deliberately. |
| 55"×71" | The standard four-seater. If you are not sure and you have an ordinary dining table in an ordinary house, this is usually the one. |
| 55"×87" | A six-seater, or a four-seater with the leaf in for Sunday. Covers the table with a proper drop at both ends rather than a token edge. |
| 55"×102" | A long table, a fully extended one, or a buffet where the cloth needs to reach past the ends so nobody sees the trestle. |
Caught between two? Size up. You can bunch a longer cloth at the corners; you cannot stretch a short one.
Will the tassels last, and will the cloth crease?
A tasselled tablecloth fails at the fringe first, and almost always in the washing machine rather than at dinner. Handle the edge properly and the cloth outlives the table.
| Fine with this | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Cool gentle wash on its own, line drying, a warm iron on the flat of the cloth, everyday meals, candles in holders, children | Washing it with zips and hooks, hot water, a hot iron run over the tassels, hot pans straight onto the cloth, long-term storage folded in a tight crease |
The sequence: wash cool on its own, line dry, iron the body of the cloth while it is still faintly damp and leave the fringe alone. The step everybody skips is combing the tassels out with your fingers before it dries — do it once and they hang straight for the life of the cloth.
A scratched, mismatched table becomes the nicest surface in the room in about four seconds.
Most dining tables in real houses have a history: a heat ring from a casserole dish, a biro groove from somebody's homework, a laptop-shaped patch where the finish has gone dull. You can sand and refinish it, or you can put a cloth over it. A tassel-edged tablecloth in a soft beige does the second thing without looking like you are hiding something — the fringe makes it read as a deliberate choice rather than a dust sheet.

The tasselled edge is the difference between a tablecloth and a sheet
A plain hemmed cloth has a hard machined line all the way round, and that line is what makes budget tablecloths look like budget tablecloths. A fringe does two things instead: it adds a little weight at the perimeter so the cloth hangs down cleanly rather than lifting and curling at the corners, and it softens the outline so the cloth looks like it belongs in a home rather than a function room.
The beige ground is doing quiet work too. Pure white shows every drop of olive oil and every ring of tea, and then it has to be bleached, which shortens its life. A warm beige absorbs that everyday punishment visually, which means the cloth spends more of its time on the table and less of it in the machine.
- 39"×55" — small tables, consoles and tables for two.
- 55"×55" — the square. Works on square tables and drops into points on a round one.
- 55"×71" — the everyday four-seater size, and the most common choice.
- 55"×87" — six-seaters and tables that live with the leaf in.
- 55"×102" — long tables, fully extended tables and buffet setups.
