How long should the runner be for your table?
Every size is 14" wide — the only thing changing is the length, and the rule is simple: measure your table top and add roughly a foot at each end for the overhang. If you would rather the runner stop short of the edges instead of hanging, match it to the table length instead.

Use a trivet under anything that came out of an oven, wash cool and warm-iron it flat while slightly damp. The step people skip is storage: roll it rather than folding it, because a fold line pressed in for six months in a drawer is the one thing an iron will not fully take out.

Damask is structural — the pattern comes from the direction the threads run, with the design catching light one way and the ground catching it the other. There is nothing on the surface to rub off, which means the runner looks the same after two years of Sunday lunches as it did the first time you laid it out.
It also behaves better under a table setting. Damask is tonal rather than high-contrast, so plates, glasses and cutlery read clearly against it instead of disappearing into a busy print. The pattern is visible when you look for it and quiet when there is food on the table — which is the correct priority order for something you eat off.
- Sandstone — a warm, sandy neutral. The one that looks best on dark or mid-toned wood, and the safest choice if the dining room is otherwise plain.
- Soft Grey — cool and understated. Best on pale oak, white or painted tables, and the most forgiving with mismatched crockery.
- Sage Green — muted, slightly dusty green. The one with actual colour in it, and it does the most in a room where everything else is wood and white.
