How many sponges should I actually order?
Coconut fibre doesn't rot in the cupboard, so buying ahead costs you nothing but shelf space. The only real difference between these is how long it is before you think about dish sponges again.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 3 Pcs | One person, one sink, and you want to see whether you get on with a firmer sponge before committing. |
| 6 Pcs | A household that cooks most nights, and likes one sponge for pans and a separate one for glasses. |
| 9 Pcs | You keep a sponge at the kitchen sink, one in the utility, one for the car, and you're tired of the mid-week supermarket run. |
Most people who start with three come back for nine.
Will it scratch my pans?
Coconut fibre is stiff, not sharp. It has enough bite to shift baked-on rice, but the fibres flex rather than cut, which is the difference between scrubbing and sanding.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Stainless steel pans, cast iron, stoneware, ceramic plates, glass, roasting trays, chopping boards, the sink itself. | Non-stick coatings, polished copper, anything with a printed or gilded pattern you care about. |
Rinse it out and stand it on its edge so water runs off both faces. That last part is the step people skip, and it is the only reason a natural sponge ever starts to smell.
The washing-up bowl stops smelling like last Tuesday.
You know the state a plastic sponge reaches around day nine. It goes soft in the middle, holds grey water no matter how hard you squeeze it, and develops a smell that transfers to your hands. So you throw it out, feel briefly bad about it, and open another shrink-wrapped pack of four. Coconut fibre skips that whole cycle: it dries stiff, it doesn't hold onto whatever it just cleaned off, and it goes in the bin at the end without any guilt attached.

Why the fibre matters more than the shape
Coconut fibre comes off the husk as a coarse, springy strand. Packed together, those strands make a surface with thousands of small edges rather than one flat abrasive face. That is what lets it lift dried egg off a plate without you leaning on it, and it is why the sponge keeps working after a month instead of collapsing into a soft grey pad. Because the fibre is hollow and stiff, it sheds water fast. A sponge that dries between uses simply doesn't grow the bacteria that makes an old one reek.
It also rinses clean. Run it under the tap and the grease goes with the water instead of settling into the middle of the pad, which is the failure mode of every soft synthetic sponge you've owned.
Which pack size suits which kitchen
- 3 Pcs — a starter run. Enough to keep one at the sink and two in the drawer, and roughly a season of ordinary use for one or two people.
- 6 Pcs — the sensible default for a family kitchen where the pan sponge and the glassware sponge should never be the same object.
- 9 Pcs — for households that go through sponges properly, or anyone who wants spares stashed in the utility room, the caravan and the shed.
