Which size — and why are some listed in inches and some in cm?

The cm-labelled options are the same five sizes written the other way, so pick by what it has to cover and ignore the units. 70x100cm is the same blanket as 28"×39", 100x150cm matches 39"×59", 150x200cm matches 59"×79", 180x200cm matches 71"×79", and 200x230cm matches 79"×91".

Choose If this sounds like you
28"×39" (or 70x100cm) A pram, a cot, a toddler, or a blanket that lives in the car. Small enough that it never becomes a heap on the floor.
39"×59" (or 100x150cm) Over your legs at a desk or in an armchair. The one for a cold home office, and for anyone who wants a blanket, not a bed cover.
59"×79" (or 150x200cm) One adult on a sofa, head to toe, with enough spare to tuck along your side. The size most people should pick.
71"×79" (or 180x200cm) Two people under it at once without either of them strategising. Also sits properly across a double bed.
79"×91" (or 200x230cm) Queen bed coverage with a drop down both sides, or the family blanket for a big sofa on a Sunday afternoon.

If it is for a bed, measure the mattress and go one size up — the drop over the edges is what makes it look deliberate.

Nine colours — how do I not pick the wrong one?

Decide first whether you want the blanket to vanish into the room or to be the colour in it. With this many options that one question does most of the filtering.

Blend in Stand out
Ivory White, Beige, Dark Brown and Black sit with whatever furniture you already own and still look tidy when they are left crumpled on the sofa. Yellow, Light Blue, Pink, Green and Purple are the ones that do a job in a plain room — they read as the accent colour and save you buying cushions.

Wash cool, detergent only, and dry on low or lay it flat. The step people skip: no fabric softener. It coats a soft blanket's fibres, clumps the surface, and is the usual reason a plush throw loses its hand after a couple of months.

One blanket that covers the pram, the office chair and the queen bed — you just have to pick which.

Cold does not arrive all at once in a house. It arrives in specific places: the chair by the window, the end of the bed, the back seat of the car on the way home from swimming. Most people solve those one at a time with whatever is lying around, which is how you end up with four unrelated blankets and no good one. Buying the right size for the actual spot — small enough to stay put, large enough to cover what needs covering — is a duller decision, and it is the one that means you stop thinking about it.

Cloud Haven Throw Blanket in use

Softness you can feel in the shop, and softness that is still there in a year

Every blanket feels good when it is new. What separates them is how the surface behaves after fifty nights of being sat on and twenty trips through a machine. Fine, dense fibres give you that immediate cloud-like hand, but they also mat if they are not anchored well — the pile flattens in the spots that get the most weight, and you end up with shiny patches where someone's elbow always lands. The blanket you keep is the one where the surface recovers when you shake it out, where the edges do not curl after washing, and where the colour stays even rather than going patchy at the folds. That is all unglamorous stuff, and it is exactly what decides whether this ends up on the sofa or in the linen cupboard.

Which colour, and what it does

  • Ivory White — the pale neutral that makes a room look lighter. Least forgiving, best looking.
  • Beige — warm and furniture-toned. The one people buy when they are not sure.
  • Dark Brown — rich and grounded, and it sits with leather and timber without competing.
  • Black — sharp and practical. Pets, kids, snacks on the sofa: nothing shows.
  • Yellow — warm and bright. Buy it for a grey room and a north-facing window.
  • Light Blue — cool and calm. The most bedroom-ish of the nine.
  • Pink — soft and warm rather than loud. Good in a child's room or a pale bedroom.
  • Green — sits naturally with plants and timber; the easiest of the bright colours to live with.
  • Purple — the boldest. Choose it when you want one strong colour and nothing else in the room to change.
