How big should it be — one person, or the whole sofa?

Three of the four sizes are the same 79" length and only get wider, so the real question is how many people are getting under it. Width is what decides whether this is your blanket or the household's.

Choose If this sounds like you
47"×79" One person, full length, feet covered. The armchair blanket, and narrow enough to wrap around you and still walk to the kitchen.
59"×79" One person who likes to be properly cocooned, or two people who are prepared to negotiate. Also fits neatly across a single bed.
71"×79" Two adults on a sofa with no tug-of-war, or a double bed where you want it to hang past the mattress edge.
79"×91" Bed-sized. Use it as a top layer on a queen through winter, or as the family blanket that covers three people and a dog on a Sunday.

Households that buy one narrow one usually end up buying a second rather than sharing.

How do I stop a plush blanket going flat and matted?

Heat is what ruins them, not washing. A deep, soft pile is made of fine fibres standing up; high heat in a dryer welds them together and no amount of brushing brings them back.

Do Avoid
Wash cool on its own or with other soft items, detergent only. Dry on low or lay it flat. Shake it out hard once it is dry to lift the pile back up. Hot washes and hot tumble drying. Fabric softener, which coats the fibres and makes them clump. Washing it with towels or anything with velcro, buttons or zips — those catch and pull the surface.

The step people skip is washing it by itself the first time. A new plush blanket releases loose surface fibres in the first wash, and if that happens alongside your dark clothes you will be picking them off for a week.

The heating goes on an hour later every night.

Most winter evenings do not need a warmer house, they need a warmer person. You sit down at eight, you get cold about half past, and someone gets up and turns the thermostat up for the entire flat because one person's feet are cold on the sofa. A blanket that is genuinely warm and genuinely pleasant to be under solves that at the level it actually occurs. It is also the difference between a blanket that gets used and one that lives folded on a shelf looking decorative — nobody reaches for a scratchy blanket twice.

Pile depth is what you are buying, and it is why the drape matters

Two plush blankets can feel identical in the shop and behave completely differently on a couch. The difference is what is underneath the softness. A thin backing with a deep pile glued to the surface feels lovely for a minute, then it sits on top of you like a sheet of fur — no weight, no seal, cold air coming in at the shoulder. What makes a blanket like this work is that the pile has enough body behind it to drape: it follows the shape of your legs, tucks in at the sides under its own weight and traps a layer of warm air instead of letting it out every time you move. That is also why it survives being sat on — the surface recovers rather than staying crushed in the shape of whoever was there last.

Which colour, and what it does to a room

  • Ivory Cream — the safest and the softest-looking. Disappears into pale sofas and white bedding.
  • Velvet Red — deep and rich. The winter one, and the one that looks right in a room with dark timber.
  • Matcha — muted soft green. Calm rather than bright, and unexpectedly good against grey upholstery.
  • Latte — warm mid-beige. The most furniture-like colour here; it reads as part of the sofa.
  • Blush Pink — soft and warm. A bedroom colour more than a living-room one.
  • Purple Passion — saturated and confident. Pick it if you want the blanket to be visible from the doorway.
  • Berry Blue — deep blue with warmth in it. Works with navy and denim tones without matching them exactly.
  • Charcoal — dark grey, the practical choice in a house with pets or a habit of eating on the sofa.
