Is a four-layer cotton blanket too warm for me?
It is warm without being smothering, because the warmth comes from trapped air between layers rather than from a thick synthetic fill. That distinction decides whether it works for you.

Care: machine wash cool on a gentle cycle, mild detergent, no bleach, tumble dry low or line dry. It will come out of the first wash softer and slightly crinkled — that is the layers settling and it is meant to happen.
The step people skip: drying it low. High heat shrinks the stitching lines faster than the fabric between them, and that is what puckers a layered blanket permanently.

The usual problem with blankets is binary. Fleece is warm and sweaty and holds static; a single cotton throw is breathable and does nothing at all once the room drops below comfortable. So most homes own both, and neither is right.
