Which size fits the way I actually cook?

The dimensions are on every option, so measure the free run of counter beside your stove before you decide. The chess-square inlay is identical across all three — you are choosing how much room you get between the knife and the edge.

Choose If this sounds like you
Small (12"×8") An apartment kitchen with about a foot of usable counter. Garlic, chillies, a wedge of cheese — the board you never bother putting away.
Medium (14"×9") You cook dinner most nights and want to get through an onion, a pepper and a courgette without scraping the first one into a bowl to make room.
Big (16"×11") You carve at the table, or the board is going out with cheese, figs and a knife on it while people help themselves.

The Big is the one that gets photographed. The Medium is the one that gets used.

How do I keep acacia looking like this?

Acacia is a dense hardwood and it is forgiving, but water and heat are the two things it will not forgive.

    Works Avoid
Hand wash in warm soapy water, towel dry immediately, stand on edge; food-safe mineral oil when the grain goes pale and dry-looking Dishwasher, soaking, hot pans set straight down on it, and olive or vegetable oil as a conditioner — they turn rancid inside the wood

The routine: scrape, wash, dry standing on edge, oil every few weeks or whenever the surface looks thirsty. A stubborn smell after garlic or fish comes out with coarse salt and half a lemon rubbed across the grain.

The step people skip: oiling at all. An unoiled hardwood board dries out from the inside and starts opening fine cracks along the joins, and by then it is too late.

Prep on it all week, then put food on it and carry it to the table without changing a thing.

The usual kitchen has a scarred plastic board that has gone slightly concave and holds the smell of every onion since 2021. It works, technically. It also means that when you want to put out cheese and salami, you are hunting for a platter you do not own.

This board has a chess-square face — alternating light and dark acacia set into a grid across the whole surface. It is heavy enough to stay put while you cut and good-looking enough that carrying it through to the table is the obvious move.

Chess-Inspired Acacia Wood Chopping Board detail of the light and dark squares

Why acacia, and why the squares are not decoration

Acacia is a naturally dense, tight-grained hardwood, which is what stops a board going soft and furry after a few months of knife work. A dense surface takes the blade cleanly and closes back over the cut rather than holding a groove open for bacteria to sit in — the reason wood boards outlast plastic ones despite everyone's instincts saying the opposite.

The chess grid is structural, not printed. Each square is a separate piece of acacia joined to its neighbours, and because their grain directions alternate, no single long grain runs the length of the board. That is what resists the warping and end-splitting a one-piece plank develops beside a sink. The light and dark squares are the wood's own tonal variation, so the pattern goes all the way through instead of sitting on top.

    Three sizes, three jobs

    • Small (12"×8") — the always-out board. Sits by the stove, handles the quick jobs, looks like a deliberate object rather than clutter on a small counter.
    • Medium (14"×9") — the everyday workhorse. Enough surface to prep a full meal's vegetables in one go, still light enough to lift and tip into a pan one-handed.
    • Big (16"×11") — the serving board. Room to carve a roast with the juices staying on the wood, or to lay out a full grazing spread with the chess pattern showing between the food.

    What You're Getting

    • One Chess-Inspired Acacia Wood Chopping Board in your chosen Size

    • Works as a serving board straight off the counter
    • Hand wash only — no dishwasher, no soaking
    • Towel dry and stand on edge so both faces dry evenly
    • Re-oil with food-safe mineral oil, never cooking oil
