Which colour for my table?

One size — 13"×71" — so the only choice is colour, and it comes down to what your tabletop is made of. A runner either continues the wood or interrupts it, and both are valid.

Choose If this sounds like you
Beige You want the weave texture without adding a colour to the room. Sits on oak or pine like it grew there, and never clashes with whatever is on the plates.
Orange Your dining area is the beige-and-wood default and you want one warm stripe through the middle of it. The most visible of the four.
Green There are plants in the room, or the kitchen has green cabinetry or tile that currently has nothing echoing it on the table.
Black Pale table, black chair legs or black light fittings, and you want the runner to tie the hardware to the table. Also the most forgiving with red wine.

Beige plus one colour is the usual pairing — one for daily use, one for when people come over.

Will 13"×71" fit, and will it stay put?

Measure your table length before anything else — a runner should stop short of the table ends or overhang deliberately, never end level with them. Level looks like an accident.

Works on Avoid
Tables longer than 71", where the runner sits inset with bare wood showing at both ends A table almost exactly 71" long — the runner will finish flush and look mis-measured
Shorter tables, run with a deliberate overhang at each end Very small round tables, where 71" of runner has nowhere sensible to go
Sideboards, console tables, kitchen islands and dresser tops Putting hot pans straight on it — a runner is not a trivet

Care, and the step people skip: press the fold lines out before the first meal. It ships folded, and creased woven fabric sits proud of the table and catches every glass base until you flatten it. A cool iron on the reverse, or a night under a stack of books, sorts it.

The dining table stops being the place where post accumulates.

An empty dining table is a horizontal surface, and horizontal surfaces collect things — keys, mail, a laptop, a school bag. Nobody decides to do this; it just happens, because nothing about a bare table says it is set aside for anything. A runner down the middle changes the read of the surface. It looks laid, so people put things around it rather than on it, and the table stays a table.

Woven, not printed — and on a table that matters more than usual

A table runner takes more direct abuse than almost any other soft furnishing in a house. Glass bases dragged across it, plates set down hot, elbows, sleeves, the occasional spill. Printed fabric shows wear on a table faster than anywhere else, because the surface is flat and lit from above and every scuff catches the light.

A woven pattern has the colour running through the structure of the cloth rather than sitting on its face, so surface abrasion does not take the pattern with it. The weave also gives the runner enough body to lie flat under its own weight, which matters more than it sounds — a limp runner rucks up every time somebody slides a plate, and you spend the meal straightening it.

What each colour does at the table

  • Beige — reads as texture rather than colour. The one to buy if the table is already surrounded by a lot of decision-making.
  • Orange — warm and clearly visible down the length of the table. Best against pale wood, and it makes a plain white plate look considered.
  • Green — picks up plants, foliage and green kitchen fittings. The most natural-looking of the four against raw or mid-tone wood.
  • Black — the graphic option. Sharpens a pale table, ties in black chair legs and pendant fittings, and hides an evening of red wine better than the rest.
