The step people skip: combing the fringe out before it dries. Cotton fringe sets hard in whatever tangle the spin cycle left it in, and once dry you are picking it apart strand by strand.

Cotton is the right fiber for it. Synthetic fringe goes wiry and starts to look plasticky after a few washes; cotton fringe softens and hangs better over time. The same applies to the body of the throw — it breathes, so it works as a bed layer in summer rather than being a purely winter item you put away in April.
