Six lengths — which one is my table?
Every size is 55″ wide, so measure the length of your tabletop and add roughly 16″. That leaves about 8″ hanging at each end, which is enough to look intentional and not enough to sit in anyone's lap.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 55″×63″ | A small square or round table, a breakfast nook, or a folding table that comes out for craft afternoons and goes back in the cupboard. |
| 55″×71″ | A four-seater. The everyday kitchen table in most flats and smaller houses. |
| 55″×79″ | A six-seater dining table — the most common size going, and the right guess if you can't measure right now. |
| 55″×87″ | A long six or a tight eight, or a six where you'd rather the ends fell lower for a more formal line. |
| 55″×98″ | An eight-seater, or an extending table with the leaf in for birthdays and holidays. |
| 55″×102″ | A long farmhouse table, or a garden trestle set up for people who all arrived at once. |
Between two lengths? Take the longer one. Too much drop looks generous; too little looks like a mistake.
Can I use it outside?
Yes, with two caveats, and both are about the weather rather than the cloth.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Garden and patio tables on a calm day, covered decks and verandas, indoor dining tables, sideboards, and picnic tables with something heavy in the middle | Leaving it out overnight in dew or rain, leaving it in full sun for weeks on end, and windy days without clips — fabric this wide catches a breeze like a sail |
Bring it in when you bring the glasses in. Cool machine wash, line dry, and the step people skip: get it back on the table while it's still faintly damp and smooth it flat with your hands. It sets to the shape of the tabletop as it dries and you never need to iron a cloth this size, which is the actual reason most tablecloths end up unused in a drawer.
The table that survives a household and still looks like it was chosen.
A pale plain cloth is a lovely idea until the first cup of tea goes down without a coaster. Then you're either washing it constantly or looking at a ring for the rest of the week. A busy botanical print is the practical answer nobody admits to: butterflies and garden foliage over a blue ground break up the surface so completely that a splash of coffee has nowhere to announce itself.

Why the pattern scale is the thing that matters
Tablecloth prints fail in two directions. Go too large and the design gets carved up by plates, serving dishes and a fruit bowl until you're only ever seeing a fragment of a flower. Go too small and from standing height the whole thing collapses into a texture — a blue blur, no butterflies at all.
The butterfly garden pattern is pitched between those, at the scale where individual motifs still resolve once the table is laid but the ground color holds the design together from across the room. That's also why it reads as boho rather than fussy: the print has enough breathing space between motifs that it doesn't crowd whatever crockery you already own.
How the lengths behave in practice
- 55″×63″ — close to square. The one that suits round tables, and the easiest to wash and re-lay in an afternoon.
- 55″×71″ and 55″×79″ — the everyday sizes for four and six seats. Enough drop to look dressed, short enough to stay out of the way.
- 55″×87″ — where the drop starts to read as formal rather than casual.
- 55″×98″ and 55″×102″ — the extended-table lengths. These are what you buy for the three times a year everyone comes over, and they're the reason a folded tablecloth beats hiring linen.
