Pilling happens where loose surface fibres rub against something rough — denim, velcro, a dog's claws, a hot dryer drum. Almost all of it is preventable with two habits, and one of them takes no effort at all.

Why the pile depth decides whether this is worth owning

The tonal grain isn't printed onto a flat surface; it reads through the depth of the pile, so the pattern shifts slightly depending on which way the fibres are lying and where the light is coming from. Run a hand down it and the grain darkens. It's the same reason velvet looks different from two sides of a room.
