Which size, and which colour?
Size first, and it is a simple split — 14"×30" is the hand towel, 28"×55" is the bath towel. Most bathrooms need both, in the same colour, which is what makes a rail look deliberate instead of accumulated.

Why do towels stop absorbing after a few months?
Almost always because of what has been washed into them. Cotton dries you by wicking, and anything that coats the fiber blocks that. New towels also arrive with a light finish on them from manufacturing, which is why the very first wash matters more than any other.

The flat band along the edge is doing real work too. It gives the towel a defined hem so it hangs straight rather than curling, and it takes the strain where the towel gets gripped and pulled. Towels without one tend to go wavy along the sides after a dozen washes, which is the point at which a bathroom starts looking scruffy even though everything in it is clean.
