Will these actually dry anything, or just smear it around?
The honeycomb weave is the answer to that. A flat towel presses water sideways. A waffled surface has structure to it, so water goes into the pockets rather than across the glass — which is why this weave has been the standard for bar and kitchen towels for a very long time.

Wash warm with like colors and tumble low. The step people skip is leaving out the fabric softener. Softener coats the fibers and makes the towel water-repellent, which is precisely the opposite of the job. If they ever feel like they have stopped absorbing, a hot wash with no detergent will usually strip the coating back off.

What the honeycomb weave is doing

The other advantage is that it improves. First wash, the cells open up and the towel loses the slight stiffness it arrives with. By the third or fourth it is noticeably softer and more absorbent than it was on day one, which is unusual — most textiles are at their best in the packet.
