How long a runner do I need for my table?
Measure the tabletop, then go longer — a runner that stops short of the table edge looks like a mistake, and one that overhangs never does. Every length here is 13" wide, so the only decision is how far down the ends you want it to fall.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 13"×79" or 13"×87" | A round table, a small square four-seater, or a console under the hallway mirror where you just want something to sit the lamp and the keys bowl on. |
| 13"×94" or 13"×108" | The standard six-seater most dining rooms have, and you want the jacquard birds visible down the middle with a little drop at each end. |
| 13"×118" or 13"×138" | A long farmhouse table that seats eight or ten, or you pull the extension leaf out every Christmas and want the runner to still reach. |
If you're between two lengths, take the longer one. You can always let the ends hang further.
Will it survive an actual dinner?
It's a woven jacquard, not a print, so the floral and bird pattern is built into the cloth rather than sitting on top of it. That matters the first time someone puts a hot serving dish down on it.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Wood dining tables, glass tops, marble and stone consoles, sideboards, a piano lid, an outdoor table on a dry day. | Leaving it under a candle that burns down, and putting a pan straight off the burner on it with no trivet. |
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, wash it on its own the first time, and hang or tumble low. The step people skip: take it out while it's still slightly damp and lay it flat on the table to dry. It sets itself flat and you never touch an iron.
A bare dining table, dressed in about four seconds.
Most dining tables spend six days a week holding mail, a laptop charger and someone's abandoned water glass. The table itself is fine — it's the empty expanse of it that makes the room read as unfinished. A runner down the centre gives the surface a spine. Suddenly the candlesticks have somewhere to be, the fruit bowl looks deliberate instead of parked, and the mail has visibly encroached on something, which is usually enough to make someone move it.

Jacquard is why this doesn't go limp after a season
A printed runner is one flat layer with a pattern stamped on the face. Wash it a few times and the ink softens, the edges curl, and it starts to lie on the table like a tea towel. Jacquard weaving works differently — the birds, the flowering stems and the border are made by the loom lifting and dropping individual warp threads, so the pattern is structural. Run your thumb across it and you can feel the raised petals and the outline of the wings.
That construction also gives the cloth body. It has enough weight to stay put when someone leans across for the salt, and enough drape that the ends hang in a soft fall rather than sticking out sideways. And because there's no printed surface to wear off, the pattern on the runner after twenty washes is the same pattern that came out of the bag.
Choosing your length
- 13"×79" — Short and neat. Sits across a round table without the ends puddling on the chairs, or fits a hallway console exactly.
- 13"×87" — The compact dining option. Covers a four-seater centre with a modest drop each end.
- 13"×94" — The safe middle. Suits most six-seaters and leaves room for place settings on both sides.
- 13"×108" — A generous drop at both ends, which is the look people are usually after in photos.
- 13"×118" — For long tables, or if you want the ends to hang low enough to read as a proper flourish.
- 13"×138" — The extended-table length. Buy this one if your table has leaves and you host at capacity.
