Three sizes — which shape do you actually need?
Same floral, same reversible cotton in all three; you are choosing a footprint, not a quality. The middle size is the one people miss, and it solves a specific problem.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 59"×79" | One person, one sofa, one warm evening. Long and narrow, so it covers you head to toe without a heap of surplus fabric on the floor. |
| 71"×79" | You want a bed covered edge to edge but you don't want the extra length pooling at the foot. Nearly square, which is the right shape for a double bed or for spreading on the grass. |
| 79"×91" | Two people, a bigger bed, and you want it hanging down both sides rather than stopping level with the mattress edge. |
If the blanket is going to spend as much time outdoors as indoors, the near-square 71"×79" is the one that behaves best on the ground.
Will a floral blanket date the room?
A single-sided floral will. A reversible one gives you an exit. That is genuinely the main argument for two finished faces rather than one.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Beds in warm weather, sofas, guest rooms, picnics and deck chairs, and layering under a heavier quilt in cooler months for weight without heat | Bleach on either face, hot tumble drying, and leaving it folded away damp after a day outside |
Cold or warm machine wash, tumble low or line dry, and shake it out before folding. The step people skip is alternating which face goes up — both sides are finished, so rotating them keeps sun exposure and wear even instead of ageing one face faster than the other.
Two blankets in one piece of cloth, and you decide which one today is.
A patterned blanket is a commitment. You buy the floral, you love it for a season, and then the room changes or you get tired of it, and it goes in the linen cupboard where it stays. The problem isn't the pattern — it's that a single-faced blanket only ever offers you one answer. Turn this one over and the bed reads completely differently, with the same cotton doing the same job underneath. It is the cheapest way to change a room that doesn't involve moving furniture.

Cotton and two faces — why the pair matters
Reversible cotton is a construction, not a coating. Both faces are woven and finished, which means there is no backing layer sitting behind a good side waiting to pill, bag out or fray at the hem. A single-faced blanket with a printed front and a plain back always fails at the join between the two; a properly reversible one has nothing to come apart.
Cotton then handles everything a blanket like this gets asked to do. It breathes, so it works as bedding in warm months instead of turning into a sweat trap by two in the morning. It washes on a normal cycle, which matters if it is going outside onto grass. And it softens with laundering rather than degrading, so the version of this blanket you have in two years is the nicer one.
The three sizes, in a real room
- 59"×79" — the throw. Folded in thirds along the back of a sofa it shows a wide band of the floral, which is enough pattern to carry a neutral living room without adding cushions.
- 71"×79" — the near-square. On a bed it sits edge to edge with no surplus length dragging on the floor, and off the bed it is the only one of the three that lies flat and even on the ground.
- 79"×91" — the bed cover. Wide enough that the floral becomes the whole surface of the bed and everything else in the room can stay plain. Also the one that survives two people pulling in opposite directions.
