12"×12" or 22"×22" — how much of the floor needs covering?

Go by where your feet actually land, not by the size of the shower. The small one is a standing spot. The large one is a floor.

Choose If this sounds like you
12"×12" You shower standing in one place, or you want something underfoot at the exact spot by the drain where the enamel goes slick. Also the one for a small corner cubicle where anything bigger would ride up the curve.
22"×22" Someone in the house steadies themselves on the wall, or turns while washing their hair. A shared family bathroom where nobody stands in the same spot twice.

If you are buying it for an older parent or a child's bath, take the larger one — the confidence comes from not having to look down.

Will it stay put on my shower floor?

A non-slip mat needs full, flat contact underneath it — that is the whole mechanism. Smooth surfaces give it that. Heavily textured ones give it air gaps, and a mat with air under it slides.

    Works on Avoid
Acrylic and enamel bathtubs Small mosaic tile with deep grout lines running under the whole mat
Smooth moulded shower trays Anti-slip trays with a pronounced raised grip pattern
Glazed tile in large flat pieces Stone or textured slate with an uneven face

Three steps. Rinse the floor and the underside of the mat so there is no soap film between them. Lay it down and press across the whole circle with your palm, working outward. Then the step everyone skips: lift one edge after your shower and let the floor underneath dry, because the thing that ruins a bath mat is never the mat — it is the water that sat under it for a fortnight.

Rinse it under the shower head when you clean the bathroom and hang it over the screen to dry.

You stop bracing before you step in.

There is a specific small tension in a slippery shower: the half-second where you plant a foot and wait to see whether it holds. Wet enamel and moulded acrylic are the worst for it, and soap makes them worse still. It is why people wash their hair with one hand on the wall. A round mat under the standing spot removes that calculation entirely — you step in and get on with it, and the shower goes back to being the least eventful part of the morning.

Safe Shower Round Non-Slip Mat detail of the circular surface

Why round beats rectangular in a shower

A rectangle has corners, and corners are where a bath mat fails. They lift first, they trap water first, and they are the first thing to curl and go tacky. A circle has no corner to start that process, and it also sits more sympathetically in a cubicle, where the floor usually curves up to the walls — a rectangular mat fights that curve at four points, a round one does not fight it anywhere. The surface itself is doing two jobs at once: giving your sole something to grip on top, and holding contact with the floor underneath. That is why the underside condition matters more than the material name. Keep both faces clean and it behaves; let soap scum build on either and it turns into exactly the thing it was bought to prevent.

    • Pink — soft and warm against white enamel. The one people pick for a child's bathroom, where a visible target on the floor is genuinely useful.
    • Grey — the quiet default. Reads as part of the tile rather than an accessory, and hides the faint water marks that show up on lighter colors between cleans.
    • Blue — cool and slightly clinical in a good way, the color that makes a white shower look intentionally spa-like rather than plain.
    • Green — the one for bathrooms that already have something living in them, a plant on the windowsill or a green-toned tile. Warmer than blue, calmer than pink.
